Adam West & Burt Ward Set to Return for Animated BATMAN ’66 Movie

The 1960s Batman television series has been going through a bit of a revival of late, first with DC’s Batman ’66 comics, and finally with the long awaited release of the entire series on Blu-ray and DVD late last year. After decades of legal red tape kept holding things up between Twentieth Century Fox, who produced the show back in the day, and Warner Bros., who owns DC comics, not only is the show is finally available at long last, but so is a ton of merchandise featuring the TV versions of the characters. It’s ’60s “Bat-mania” all over again.

The seminal series officially turns 50 next year, and to celebrate the show’s golden anniversary, the Dynamic Duo of Adam West and Burt Ward have announced their participation in a new animated project featuring their versions of the characters, during a panel at the Mad Monster Party convention in Charlotte, North Carolina this past weekend. The new 90-minute animated movie will possibly be the first of two, and is set to hit sometime in 2016.

So what will the movie be about? Not a clue, but chances are this is a straight-to-DVD movie like many of DC and Warner Bros. Animation’s recent output. Although many of the actors from the original show are long gone, Julie Newmar who played Catwoman and Yvonne Craig who played Batgirl are still with us; hopefully they’ll be asked to reprise their roles just like West and Ward were. And it would certainly be fun to see versions of character who never made it onto the series, like Scarecrow, Two-Face and Harley Quinn, but done in the campy stylings of the old show. Check out the announcement from the convention below:
