Amidst the flurry of news regarding pilot pick-ups, cancellations and unexpected steps closer to six seasons and a movie, one title stood out, especially to Marvel fans: Disney’s Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. ABC has now officially ordered the hotly anticipated Joss Whedon-directed pilot to series, laying to rest any unease over whether the pilot would suffer the fate of so many Chitauri. To sweeten the deal, ABC will allow eager agents to get their first look at the series by airing a preview during Sunday’s season finale of Once Upon a Time. I don’t know about you guys, but this is the best news I’ve heard since J. August Richards joined the cast.

Clark Gregg reprises his role of Agent Phil Coulson from Marvel’s feature films as he assembles a small, highly select group of Agents from the worldwide law-enforcement organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D. Together they investigate the new, the strange, and the unknown across the globe, protecting the ordinary from the extraordinary. Coulson’s team consists of Agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), highly trained in combat and espionage, Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen) expert pilot and martial artist, Agent Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker); brilliant engineer and Agent Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) genius bio-chemist. Joining them on their journey into mystery is new recruit and computer hacker Skye (Chloe Bennet).

I think the show could have great potential ,if done right . It would be awesome if there could be some “Guest Star Heroes ” ,but I doubt that will happen . The cast seems decent ,but I am not too excited .
M Cluster makes a good point. After seeing Buff the Vampire Slayer movie, I couldn’t imagine that anyone would want to see a series made from it. And yet it was quite popular. You can’t judge any new show by just one character.
I’d like to see a plausible explanation of Coulson’s resurrection.
This could work well. SHIELD is an old concept from the old comics and there are a lot of people that will appreciate this angle.
@ bastien I could not disagree with you more. While Coulson is not currently a major character what he serves as is a canvas for the genius that is Joss Whedon and his crew to flesh out a larger Marvel universe and opportunities to have crossover appearances by various heroes throughout. It also will provide a space where lesser known characters who may not work well on the big screen initially to get some exposure.
What Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D. really represents is POTENTIAL and I believe putting it in the hands of someone like Whedon is the smartest thing they could have done. (Yes I am a Whedon fanboy, but that doesn’t make him any less of a genius).
What made The Avengers great is the spectacle of all these heroes working together. Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D. presents the opportunity to create a whole new set of characters from the ground up while leveraging the spectacle of the larger universe that surrounds it. The small screen also allows for creators to take risks that would simply be too dangerous for the big screen.
No one cared about Buffy, until they did. No one cared about Malcolm Reynolds – until they did. No one cared about Echo… well they can’t all be winners.
I have nothing but hope for the new endeavor Marvel is undertaking and getting Whedon away from Fox is a great thing on it’s own. I am excited to see what is to come.
Here’s the thing about SHIELD: Without the Avengers or other big heroes, no one cares.
If you took the Avengers out of “The Avengers” and it was just a movie about SHIELD, no one would have cared. No one should care.
Agent Coulson is not enough to make this good or popular. Coulson worked because he had Iron Man et al to play off of. Who does he have to play off of here? Nobody and Ming-Na Wen. Coulson is not a headliner, he’s a bit part. A great bit part, but a bit part none the less.
All this will serve to do is pull in some initial people who enjoyed the movies and then lose them all when they realize this show is nothing at all like the movies. And there’s no way it *can* be like the movies. It’ll be the first misstep of the Marvel Studios universe and will be used as a weapon against taking further Marvel Studios risks.
Oddly enough, somehow Fox will manage to get ABC to run episodes in an incoherent order and then cancel the series. You wouldn’t think that could happen.
