A Supercut Tribute to the Cinematic Imagination of Brad Bird

Though he’s only got five feature films under his belt, Brad Bird has certainly cemented himself as one of the most distinctive and singular filmmakers in Hollywood. His movies all have, if not a central narrative theme, a central style, a hearkening back to the 1960s, and a definite love and passion for adventure and excitement. Lots of frenetic action and thrills, but in a distinctly positive way, in Bird’s movies, and it’s truly no wonder they’ve been embraced by kids of all ages, to use that old amusement park saying. His movies ARE like amusement parks, but without the sore gut that comes from too much funnel cake.

YouTube user Joel Walden has used his editing skills to do a supercut of clips from all five of Bird’s movies: The Iron Giant, The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, and Tomorrowland. At the time the video went up (May 21st), Tomorrowland had not yet come out, and so all the clips of that were taken from the trailer or the released clips, but it’s amazing how well they blend in, and how much all of the movies definitely seem of a piece when shown together like that. No matter what you thought of the latest film (and I rather enjoyed it), it’s definitely right in keeping with the kinds of movies he has always made. Walden has several more of these directors’ works supercuts, which you can see on his YouTube page here.

As we know, Bird will be returning to the Incredibles for the sequel, which to us just means more and more of the kind of childlike exuberance and Saturday Matinee-thrills of a one-of-a-kind filmmaker. Now, if we could just get an Iron Giant sequel, all will be right with the world.
