Writer/Director Brad Bird Officially Back For THE INCREDIBLES 2

Although it was announced over a year ago now that Disney and Pixar would finally be producing a sequel to their beloved 2004 animated superhero hit The Incredibles, since that announcement was made, we hadn’t really heard a peep from the studio about it. This led many fans to wonder if it was even still in development, or if the original movie’s director, Brad Bird, would have anything to do with the sequel, if indeed it was something that was really on its way.

Well, now we finally have our answer; while promoting his latest film, Disney’s Tomorrowland, which hits theaters in a couple of weeks, director Brad Bird confirmed that The Incredibles 2 (or whatever it’ll end up being called) is indeed going to be his next film. While talking to Collider, he also revealed that he already has “a bunch of pages” written for the film’s script: “I had a lot of ideas for the original Incredibles that I didn’t get a chance to use, that I like; I have ideas that I wanted to pursue a little bit, and there wasn’t enough time in Incredibles. There are new ideas I have, and I think there are enough of those together to make an interesting movie.” In the same interview, Bird revealed that Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy has approached him about a possible Star Wars film, but with The Incredibles 2 on his plate, he’ll be too busy to think about that galaxy far, far away for the immediate future.

Bird has directed five films — the animated cult classic The Iron Giant, then The Incredibles and Ratatouille for Pixar, and his first venture into live-action filmmaking, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. His latest movie, Tomorrowland, hits theaters on May 22nd, so the jury is still out on that one, but his previous four movies were all excellent. Getting him back for the sequel to The Incredibles shows that Disney and Pixar are looking to make this more than just a cash grab. (although, I assume, it will indeed grab lots of cash.) No release date has been given, but now that Bird is officially back on board, expect an announcement soon.
