For decades, virtual reality has been touted as the next big thing. With home VR consoles coming soon from Sony, HTC, and Oculus VR, that future might finally be here. And ILM appears to be gearing up to bring Star Wars to the virtual realm.
In a new video posted to YouTube, ILMxLab put out a recruiting call to potential employees to help the company create Star Wars virtual reality experiences. Judging by the footage, ILMxLab is already pretty far along in its efforts!
The early part of the video features testers trying out an interactive feature with C-3PO and BB-8 on Jakku, perhaps suggesting the premise of the game is contiguous with the timeline of Star Wars: The Force Awakens). The latter part of the video appears to depict stormtroopers and Boba Fett on Tatooine.
âWeâre starting to pivot towards actually developing a new medium for telling stories that the public can get and experience for themselves,â said John Gaeta, ILMxLabâs executive creative director. âAnything from real time cinema to virtual reality or augmented reality.â
ILM briefly posted a trailer for Star Wars: Trials on Tatooine on its website before it was pulled. The game appears to be a VR title which allows the player to control a lightsaber and deflect the laser blasts of stormtroopers. Unsurprisingly, it looks like a lot of fun!
