Star Wars has been doing the television thing for a while in animated form, but a possible primetime, live-action show is a topic that keeps coming up… and one that may be making new headway at ABC. Read more about a Star Wars television series in today’s TV-Cap and find out about some Stranger Things-inspired pizza names, hear from the ladies of Mr. Robot, and more.
The Galaxy in Primetime. ABC took their turn at the Television Critics Association (TCA) summer press tour on Thursday, and one reporter asked about Star Wars. Given that the network has put Marvel and The Muppets on primetime, it’s a reasonable question. Entertainment president Channing Dungey didn’t provide a definite answer about what’s going on, but she did say a Star Wars primetime series is a prospect on the horizon. She said, “As a fan, I would absolutely love to say âYes.â The conversations with Lucas, we have had conversations with them and will continue to have conversations with them. I think it would be wonderful if we could find a way to extend that brand into our programming.â
After the panel ended, Dungey added, “Itâs all a little bit hush-hush. That company exists under a big shroud of secrecy. If you feel Marvelâs secretive, [Lucasfilm] takes it to a whole other level ⦠[Talks] are ongoing. We donât have an official timeline yet.â I have two words to say to this: Yes, please. Taking Over. A Luthor is coming to National City in season two of The CW’s Supergirl. Lex’s sister Lena Luthor is sweeping into town for a fresh start as CEO of Luthor Corp. She wants to re-brand the company as a force for good. Lena will be played by Katie McGrath (she’s in a recurring role in season two, which premieres on October 10). [Comic Book Resources]
Casting of Steel. In more casting news, Legends of Tomorrow is adding Henry Heywood, Sr., a.k.a. Commander Steel, to its second season. Matthew MacCaull will take on the role of the Justice Society of America member. [Entertainment Weekly]
Demon Threat Ahoy! Starz has announced a new enemy is coming to Ash vs. Evil Dead. Joel Tobeck is playing the underworld demon Baal. He’s apparently more powerful than anything they’ve faced, and he has some sort of link to Ruby. The picture above suggests they aren’t maybe the best of friends. Ash vs. Evil Dead will return with new episodes on October 2. [Nerdist, Image: Starz]
Forecast This. Castle may be over, but Nathan Fillion will still be around ABC. He’ll appear in a multi-episode arc on season eight of Modern Family. Series executive Steven Levitan said at the TCAs that Fillion is playing “a local weatherman who gets involved with the Dunphys.” [TVLine]
Fighting for What’s Right. I’m still sad about Agent Carter being cancelled, but at least we’ll get Hayley Atwell on television this season thanks to ABC’s Conviction (premiering October 3). Atwell appeared at the TCAs to talk about the series and her role. Get all the details about Conviction here at Nerdist.
Talking About the Whys. Speaking of Agent Carter and Marvel… ABC’s Dungey didn’t really say why they cancelled the show but did say she’s continually talking with Marvel about next steps. And in regards to why Marvel’s Most Wanted didn’t happen, Dungey said, “Most Wanted, ultimately at the end of the day, did not feel as strong as some of the other pilots that we shot. We talked about it with Marvel and we all came to an agreement that we want to figure out what the next show is that we do together, is something that we all feel is as creatively strong as it can be.” I appreciate that they want shows to be worth making. Character Slices. Vinnie’s Pizzeria in Brooklyn likes pop culture, and someone there has strong feelings about Netflix’s Stranger Things. They came with a whole bunch of themed specials inspired by Barb, Eleven, Dustin, and more. Yes, they rock. See the rest of the themed pizzas right this way.
Listen to the Ladies. The female characters of USA Network’s Mr. Robot run the gamut, and the lead actresses of the smart series came to the TCAs to talk about their characters and making women part of the story. They tease the tiniest bit about the rest of season two. Read more here at Nerdist.
