A Lucasfilm Approved Korean Webcomic Offers Another Take on STAR WARS

Just over a year ago, the definition of canon in the Star Wars universe became a lot simpler. The world known as the Expanded Universe was pushed into the Legends category, and Disney and Lucasfilm took a step forward into a galaxy where everything was canon–the films, the television series, the books, the comics–everything. But try as they might, it’s hard to keep gray areas out of the picture. At Star Wars Celebration on a panel titled “One Big Story: Working Within the Star Wars Canon,” we learned about a webcomic by Korean creator Writer Hong. He’s been working with Jennifer Heddle, Senior Editor at Lucasfilm and part of the Story Group, to retell the original trilogy.

The webcomic is published online with new installments out every Friday. It follows Luke Skywalker and goes into details not necessarily seen in the final cut of the original trilogy. Hong begins his tale before A New Hope and will go all the way through and past Return of the Jedi. Hong covers some of Uncle Owen’s struggles with raising the boy and Luke’s experiences on Tatooine–like actually targeting womp rats. Even with the pieces that focus on Owen and Beru, the story is mostly told from Luke’s perspective.

Hong’s story is in Korean, and though there is an English translation available thanks to an enterprising Redditor, you can catch the gist of the story merely by scrolling through the comic on Daum.net. The art style is soft, dreamy, and completely captivating.

But back to that gray area mentioned earlier. Hong’s adaptation has room for cultural interpretation:

So, enjoy the story but don’t get too attached to the details. You know, like you did with the Expanded Universe.

What do you think of Hong’s webcomic? Let me know in the comments.
