A DEEP BLUE SEA Sequel is Coming to Syfy

When it comes shark-related cinema, the Jaws franchise pretty much has the market cornered. The only other film that even came close to stealing away some of that limelight was a certain tour de force involving super-intelligent sea-dwellers, LL Cool J playing a parrot-owning cook, and just about the best death scene Samuel L. Jackson has ever endured. We are, of course, talking about Deep Blue Sea. Here’s a refresher on just how great it is.

According to a recent report on /film, the 1999 shark movie is finally getting a Deep Blue Seaquel that’s headed directly to Syfy. Details about the film are still fairly sparse but the general idea, as one could probably guess, is centered around researchers meddling with shark experiments and the sharks getting loose to do a bit of meddling of their own. The film will be directed by Darin Scott and stars The 100‘s Michael Beach.

As with most Syfy films, we can likely expect a good deal of horror silliness that, frankly, will go perfectly with the Deep Blue Sea universe. It was a campy science fiction horror adventure full of impossible situations, over-the-top acting, and–we can’t stress this enough–LL Cool J fighting super-intelligent sharks because they ate his bird.

And while [18 YEAR OLD SPOILER ALERT] Thomas Jane and LL Cool J are the only ones to make it out of the first film alive, it’s not likely we’ll see them in the sequel. This is a bit sad considering all our fan fiction involving the two traveling around the world battling sharks together. Still, we’ll keep our fingers crossed that Syfy might someday need our script for Deep Blue Sea 3: Shark Budz.

What are your thoughts on SyFy doing a sequel? Let’s discuss in the comments below!
