And the 2018 Oscar Nominees Are…

If you’re a movie person—or, not to be exclusionary, a movie A.I. vessel or a movie fish-man hybrid or a movie xenomorph or a movie super-pig—then Oscar season is more than likely your favorite part of the year. Of course, it also might just be your least favorite part of the year, what with the Academy’s penchant for frustrating snubs, disproportionate recognition of white and male artists, and tiresomely predictable choices. All that said, “predictable” is hardly a word you’d use to describe this year’s 90th Annual Academy Awards race, the first in ages that has eschewed tradition of showing off a clear frontrunner for the Best Picture category.

Ahead of The Post‘s release at Christmastime, some folks pinpointed Steven Spielberg’s Streep- and Hanks-starring period drama about the virtues of free press, hard work, and self-sacrifice as the prototypical Oscar pick; others have put a lot of stock in Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri‘s popularity across the Guild circuit; more still are taking heed of The Shape of Water‘s slow creep toward the finish; and some of us are indeed pulling for the culturally resonant Get Out to take the ultimate win.

But we’re all getting ahead of ourselves! First we have to hear the year’s nominees, which come to us via Andy Serkis (of last year’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi and War for the Planet of the Apes) and Tiffany Haddish (breakout star of the hilarious Girls Trip) on Tuesday morning. Read the full list of nominees below!
