Where movie poster art has become nothing more than a means to throw as many images as possible at people, the album cover has remained more or less the last place for creative fronts to equally creative endeavors. But that doesn’t mean they’re perfect or above a bit of remodeling, as it were, and that’s where the always awesome Gallery 1988 comes in. As part of their newest collection, “33 and a Third and a Third” they’ve asked 100 artists to reimagine their favorite album covers in their own inimitable style.
The collection is curated by artist Dana Lechtenberg and features bands and artists from every facet of music, like Kraftwerk, The Ramones, Johnny Cash, Guns ‘N Roses, and more. Lechtenberg, who lives in Iowa, began his own show inspired by G1988, thinking he’d never get to work with them, getting 33 1/3 artists (the third being his daughter) which he did for two years. Now that he’s headed to Los Angeles, it’s a full 100.
No Age‘s Randy Randall explained in a press statement for the show, “This dialogue between contemporary artists and cultural icons speaks to what it means to be a âfanâ and an admirer of an art form that is well acknowledged yet may be on the endangered species list in terms of relevancy moving forward into a digital age. Without providing answers to the way forward, these visual and musical artists appreciate the legacy of music and visual art that is âthe album cover.’â
Have a look at a few of the album covers, and if you’re in L.A., you can see the entire set until December 21.
