Zack Snyder May Be Directing A “Star Wars” Film, But Not Episode VII….

zacksnyderstarwarsPOSTHuh. This is interesting.

When they announced the LucasFilm-Disney deal for more Star Wars films, we were told that there’d be an Episode VII and more in the saga, but Claude Brodesser-Akner over at New York Magazine’s Vulture is reporting that Zack Snyder is developing another Star Wars movie, yet it’s not Episode VII, or Episode VIII, or Episode VIIII… er, IX, or any other Roman numeral. No, it’s a movie that won’t be part of the next trilogy but will take place parallel to the saga.

Here’s Brodesser-Akner’s description of what we’re in for: “It will be an as-yet-untitled Jedi epic loosely based on Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 classic Seven Samurai, with the ronin and katana being replaced by the Force-wielding knights and their iconic lightsabers.” He notes that Toshiro Mifune, a star of Seven Samurai, was initially offered the part of Obi-Wan Kenobi, and that the movie is among George Lucas’ (and countless others’) favorites, so there’s some sense to it all.

All right, then. Are you geeked for a Star Wars movie that isn’t in the formal line of chapters? Is a remake of sorts of Seven Samurai (yeah, I know, The Magnificent Seven. And Battle Beyond the Stars, for that matter.) something that you think can fit into the Star Wars canon? Blasphemy or a good way to expand the Star Wars universe? Whaddya think? 1. TonyW says:

Makes perfect sense, since the original was largely based on Kurosawa’s “Hidden Fortress.”

    *BOOM* NED CRED

  2. There are already a ton of remakes to The Seven Samurai like The Magnificent Seven. Not to mention the whole list of movies loosely based on Kurosawa’s work. In the SciFi world there is even and episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nice were the Samurai are replaced with Ferrengi led by Quark in a very non-characteristic heroic rescue attempt.

  3. Chris Blake says:

The only flaw in this that I see is what are they going to have that will make things difficult for seven Jedi? I mean, sure a gang of Sith, but that flies in the face of established conventions. I dunno, just seems like the story doesn’t scale well. They were already pushing probability when a group of sword guys vs a bigger group of sword guys was changed to a group of gun guys vs a big group of gun guys.

  4. RG says:

There’s also a GREAT Clone Wars episode called “Bounty Hunters” based on Seven Samurai. The episode’s actually dedicated to Kurosawa.

But, set in the dark times, with Jedi-in-exile? Could be amazing. These non-numbered Star Wars movies are the things I’ve been most excited about when the buyout announcement came, and it’s amazing to think that they’re ALREADY working on them, simultaneously with new numbered stories.

  5. RRPennell says:

Ahem…there is ALREADY a Star Wars version of Seven Samurai, Head back to the 1970’s and check out the Marvel Star Wars comic #8: “Eight for Aduba-3.” I think we can all agree that 8 is better than 7…and that the Seven Samurai would have been greatly improved by the presence of a talking green rabbit man.

  6. Commander Rab says:

Can’t be any worse than where Lucas has been steering it for the last decade.

  7. Nature N3rd says:

Zack Snyder is right about where Star Wars needs to be.

Don’t get too deep in the story, make the action awesome and most important, make it look good.

  8. Buddydave says:

A Star Wars version of Seven Samurai????????

    *head explodes*

  9. Albert says:

Don’t forget that Disney already has a Seven Samurai remake in the form of A Bug’s Life
