Joe Dante’s Gremlins was one of the biggest hit movies of the ’80s, and although a sequel to it was made in 1990, many see it as a franchise that never properly got going. In the 25 years since Gremlins 2: The New Batch, fans have been wondering when Warner Brothers and producers Chris Columbus and Steven Spielberg would bring back Gizmo the Mogwai and his mischievous offspring.

For the past several years there have been rumors of a reboot, which of course didn’t make fans who grew up with the original very happy. Well, at a recent Q&A for the original film in the UK, actor Zach Galligan, who played Billy Peltzer in the original movie, said another Gremlins movie is definitely on the way, and it won’t be a remake.

“It’s not going to be a reboot. It will not be a remake in any way, shape, or form” said Galligan at the Prince Charles Cinema (via the BBC). He added, “Chris Columbus has come out and said that the first film is very near and dear to his heart and as long as he is alive it will never be remade. So the only thing they will be – and apparently are going to be – doing is something along the lines of like Jurassic World, where it will be 30 years later.”

So will Galligan return as Billy? The actor doesn’t seem 100% sure, but is also optimistic, saying “I swear on my life, I don’t know if I’m in it or not, but I think there is probably a decent chance since I’m one of the few people left standing from the first movie.” When asked about the use of CGI over practical effects, Galligan clearly showed his preference for the old school way of doing things, saying “hopefully they won’t use too much CGI, or the CGI will be really good like the Planet of the Apes movies, and hopefully we’ll have some practical effects too.”

Considering just how much money Jurassic World made, this seems like the smartest approach. And it’s not just Jurassic World either; the success of movies like Creed, and the sure-to-be success of The Force Awakens shows that the audience who grew up with those classic films want to see continuations of them, rather than movies that try to re-do the originals. And that older audience is more likely to bring their own kids if they think this movie isn’t something that walks all over their childhood memories, but honors it instead.
