Zac Efron is Ted Bundy in the New Trailer for EXTREMELY WICKED, SHOCKINGLY EVIL AND VILE

Ted Bundy is the talk of the town. The notorious serial killer is the subject of a new Netflix docu-series, Conversations With a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes, that’s been setting social media on fire. The confessional tapes, recorded by Bundy himself, were part of the research director Joe Berlinger compiled for his Bundy feature film, Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile. The series, which Berlinger also directed, serves as a preamble of sorts for Extremely Wicked, which just dropped its first trailer today.

Teen heartthrob Zac Efron is putting his inherent charm to good use as Bundy, whose good looks helped him get away with the murder of at least 30 women. The film is told through the perspective of Bundy’s longtime girlfriend, Elizabeth Kloepfer (Lily Collins), who dated the man until his arrest in 1975, and who suspected her lover of the crimes well before that. Kaya Scodelario plays Carol Anne Boone, the woman who married Bundy when he was in prison and later bore him a child. John Malkovich, Jim Parsons, Haley Joel Osment, and Dylan Baker round out the cast.

The trailer definitely gives off Scorsese wannabe vibes, with its humorous tone and ’70s crime aesthetic. Time will tell if that actually works for the story of a deranged serial killer and the women he loved and murdered. At least we know things don’t exactly pan out for Bundy, who was executed in the electric chair in 1989 after a decade on death row.

We don’t have to wait long to hear what the critics think about Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile. The film debuts at the Sundance Film Festival this Saturday.
