Your Obligatory Star Wars Day Post, Because It’s Star Wars Day, You Know

This was the big announcement, I guess, although we knew it was coming:

Okay, so, it’s Star Wars Day. And… um… what? If they’re going to declare a holiday, they should have some kind of celebration in mind. Special screenings worldwide, conventions, that sort of thing. Announcing the Blu-ray boxed set? Meh. (September 12th internationally, September 16th in North America, nine discs, over 40 hours of extras, the whole release is over at Engadget) I don’t do Blu-ray, so this wasn’t my idea of a big announcement. If you have a Blu-ray player or PS3, you might want to save up for it. (The list seems to be $135.99, but you’ll probably find it for under $100 through various sources)

How about we just remember our introduction to the saga? I’ll start: I saw it when it debuted, queuing up at a theater (I think it was the old Stanley Warner Theater) in Paramus, New Jersey for a long time to get in and see it on the big screen. Even before the opening, pretty much everyone knew that it was going to be special. I loved it, of course. My celebration for today? Nothing, to be honest; I’m not that obsessive. Also, I have work all day. I’ll just think good thoughts about the original three and leave it at that.

And you? What are you doing for Star Wars Day?

I first saw Star Wars when they were re-released in theaters in 1997. I was 4 or 5 but I still remember them being awesome.

Yawn to this. Kind of cool, but I don’t that it would be that much better than the dvds they’ve put out the past couple of years.

My intro to Star Wars – and the first movie will always be Star Wars to me – fuck that New Hope bullshit subtitle. I can deal with Episode numbers, but I’m so old and such a fan of them when I was a kid and they came out, seeing the first three movies labeled by Episode numbers makes me die a little inside :

1977, I was 7 years old, my dad took me to run some errands with him on a Saturday, where in the morning, we stopped by the small town police/fire dept bldg where he was a part time municipal judge so I got to see a real jail, climb on the firetruck and blare the sirens in a police car, and then we went to the theater at the Six Flags Theater in Arlington, Texas and saw it. My young mind, totally blown.

I like to remember when I saw Empire as well. My brother was old enough to go, but he was 5 years old and scared of the dark, where he watched I think about half the movie standing by the doors.

Well, I’m clearly the oldest of the nerds. I remember seeing the preview on my 8th birthday (May 14th), when my mom took me and my friends to see LAME “Jonathan Livingston Seagull” Look it up it’s a movie and book. I remember all we could talk about was StarWars opening in a couple of weeks.

My brothers and I took a bus downtown to see the film for the first time at the Roxy Theater in Tacoma, WA. We weren’t going to make it in, the line was too long (one screen theater). A nice couple let us cut in front of them. Great movie! It played at the theater for over a year.

I think I was 11 or 12 when I saw them. I was born in ’83, which I like to call “the year of the jedi,” so I saw them on vhs years later, thanks to my sister. I loooved them, and it’s probably the thing that made me realize “oh yeah, I AM a nerd!” even though I was into other geeky/nerdy things before that.
I always thought Star Wars Day, if there was going to be one, should be celebrated on May 25, but I get the whole “May the Fourth” thing (I guess). I have work, work, work all day (with a web soup break, of course!), but if I were going to celebrate, I whip out those old vhs tapes and watch the original trilogy with all of it’s groundbreaking-at-the-time visual effects.
    oh, which reminds me…
    HAN SHOT FIRST!

I’ll make people feel old now…

My mother didn’t even know she was pregnant with my older brother yet when Episode VI came out. I eventually was allowed to see Star Wars on TV when I was “Old Enough”, I was probably 6 or 8 years old, and only saw the Episode IV. I didn’t even know there was an Episode V until a few years later it was on TV and I watched it. My parents wouldn’t let me watch Episode VI in the house because the Ewoks creep my mother out (seriously, to this day nobody can watch Episode VI in the house). I had to covertly watch it while my parents were out.

Episode I I saw with my parents in theatre when it was released. I saw Episode II with some friends when it was in theatres, it was someone’s birthday and we were all nerds so we went to see it. I refused to see Episode III in theatres. I eventually watched it a few years ago when it was on TV to see what all the hate was about. I didn’t hate it but I don’t want to watch it again.

I watch the occasional rerun of the Clone Wars when there isn’t anything else on and I anxiously await the launch of Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Today for Star Wars day I am driving 4h to get hom for a job interview tomorrow. Sadly no Force Party for me. Maybe I’ll watch some on TV if any channels are airing the episodes tonight.

I Was 6. All I Remember Was Loving It, and being upset because I couldn’t have an Ewok for a pet.

Happy Star Wars Day, And “May the Fourth” Be With you…

I will be working today, so probably nothing. Though I do remember seeing the episode 4 for the first time when I was a kid. I don’t remember the age, I must have been like six or seven. My parents had a Betamax copy of it, and I had to sneakily watch it cause I think they had said I couldn’t. I remember the burnt out skeletons of Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru kind of freaking me out a little bit too.

So yeah…now that I’ve made all of you that saw the originals in theaters feel really, really old…have a good day! 🙂

Wow, I haven’t heard the Tenplex called that in a long time. I saw Empire a week after it came out and Jedi on opening day there. If you didn’t know, the Tenplex is gone and a Lowes stands in it’s place now. My first job was at the tri-plex outside the mall, btw.
