For three years, Young Justice fans have begged, campaigned, and binged for a new season. And miraculously, it worked! Today, Warner Bros. Animation officially announced the return of Young Justice for a third season, with the original executive producers, Brandon Vietti and Greg Weisman back for the new episodes!
Young Justice was based on the DC comic book of the same name, with a few characters from the Justice League and the Teen Titans as well. The first season focused on the superhero sidekicks: Robin, Aqualad, Artemis, Kid Flash, and Miss Martian as they joined with the newly-cloned Superboy to form their own team. The second season featured a jump forward in time and an expanded roster that included Impulse, Batgirl, Wonder Girl, Blue Beetle, a new Robin, and more heroes.
The second season ended with a cliffhanger about the fate of Kid Flash, and the apparent machinations of Darkseid. If the new season follows up on those storylines, it may also include another time jump to introduce another new batch of characters from the DC Universe.
At the moment, it’s unclear which network will host the new episodes of the series. Young Justice ran for two seasons on Cartoon Network and it had excellent ratings there. There’s a strong possibility that it will return to Cartoon Network, but Netflix may also be its new home. Young Justice fans have been relentlessly watching the second season since it made its Netflix debut, and that is very likely the tipping point that allowed the show to stage a comeback.
There’s no word yet when the third season of Young Justice will premiere, but we’re excited about the opportunity to see more stories from this amazing show.
