You Made It Weird #70: Rory Scovel

Rory Scovel (COMEDY? Um, hello?! Comedy Central Half Hour, Conan, CD Dilation) is one of Pete’s favorite comedians, friends and men with beards. For real. Just a delightful romp into comedy, the meaning of life, and why Pete is uncomfortable if you bring someone into the booth with you to sit there during the interview (but then gets over it). ENJOY, YOU WEIRDOS!!

Great/funny guest. I find that whole thing about comedians feeling obliged to make the most distasteful jokes to eachother really hard to get my head around. I can kinda see where they’re coming from on paper, but some things … you know – how can you not be offended by some things? Must be a different mindset that goes with the territory I guess. It just feels somehow devoid of any honour. Hell maybe that’s really healthy on some zen level – letting go of honour and pride. Just such a foreign concept to me so it freaks me out when they start talking about it.

  2. laura says:

    “fuck fun!” <3

  3. nick harvey says:

I remember seeing the John Oliver show and seeing Rory Scovel. Made me an instant fan and I dont think ill ever forget that. So glad you brought it up! Only the best part is it starts affectionately and devolves into yelling.

  4. Dylan says:

Rory and Pete together? Doesn’t get much better than that! Such a good episode. the Jon Dore joke about the merch booth at the funeral was perfect.

  5. Claudia says:

I always enjoy the weirdness, this one especially.

My brother died in May, and we sold his CD at the funeral. A lot of them. I think he would have enjoyed the sales pitch, “Have you gotten a CD yet? It’s a collector’s item… now.”

  6. Melissa says:

I got approved for my tickets yesterday!

    SUPER EXCITED!!!!!

  7. scott says:

Hey, guys! Ricky Gervais was trying to get into the room, right? Didn’t I hear him laughing?

    C’mon! Let him in!!!

  8. Mark says:

I love Rory, his laugh should be patented. Ditto for Pete.

I cried two or three times listening to this. Laughed too.

    Best. Podcast. Ever.

  9. Marie says:

I died laughing when you guys hugged, but it was so touching too. I completely get how joking about awful things relieves tension, and normal, empathic people know that the comic is not saying it out of sadism but, like you guys said, shining a light on the wolf in the corner.

I also love the Nick Swardson bit about his funeral. If you haven’t had him on YMIW yet, please do soon! Love this podcast!

  10. Alec says:

The Futurama writers beat us all to that joke in the Raiders of the Lost Arcade segment from Anthology of Interest II.

When invaders (from space!) attack Earth’s MilAtari HQ, the main characters flee through general Colin Pac-Man’s escape tunnel. When they emerge, Zoidberg pukes up some pixelated fruit and a gold key.

  11. ian says:

Rory, not even done this podcast. I downloaded your album. (the paying kind of download)

  12. ian says:

The videogame character bit was great.

  13. Monia says:

So, so much love for the show. Unequivocally my favourite podcast, and this episode is no different. I second Mark that Rory should come back and talk more!

And (not to beat a dead horse…) while I thoroughly enjoyed the “offensive” joke conversation and explanation why he doesn’t mind dead mom jokes etc, I’ve gotta say that the mention of the Tosh event is not a fair comparison. Rape is a thing onto its own, and should not be lumped in with those other topics. I’m sure anyone reading this is probably rolling their eyes….but yeah. Can’t let it slide.

Looking forward to next week’s eps!

  14. Alec says:

Chelsea didn’t seem to enjoy your hug at the show last night. Back to the drawing board, guys!

  15. Erin says:

This episode made my heart smile

  16. onReload says:

YES! Been waiting for Rory to show up on one of these!

  17. This show keeps on grinding into the depths of human psyche and it stimulates me on a very personal level. I am just blown away by how, you guys can unpack, sort through and organize the trivial and essential aspects of American life.
I’ve got a flashback buzz right now, and its great. This is just what I needed to end this work week.
“I’m an ant, that’s an iPhone.”

  18. Eric O. says:

I don’t know what’s going on doc…these gold rings just seem to fall out of me when I get hurt…please please please turn that into a bit! I couldn’t stop laughing through the whole riff.

  19. KDizzle53 says:

I have been enjoying Mr. Scovel’s Nissan Altima commercials very much, and you know, his consistently fantastic appearances on The Todd Glass Show. Glad to see he’s on the pod.

  20. Mark says:

I’m a little disappointed that so much time at the start was given to shop talk, because the last third or so is really fascinating. Have Rory back, like, right now, pls. (This also makes me think that a Todd Glass YMIW would be A TREAT.)
