  1. yeah this was really nice

  2. softy says:

this one’s a heart melter. who knew Koechner was such a gentleman

  3. MsBrewski says:

Hi, I’m way behind, but I thought the theory on why women like guys that are jerks was one of the more interesting and more logical I’ve heard, and quite enjoyed it.

  4. Jason McBride says:

Thank you for the water news!

  5. Ben says:

I’m new to YMIW, but this interview is the bomb. Also, for people who want more David Koechner his Jimmy Carrane (improv nerd) interview is also fantastic.

  6. Sporin says:

    DAVID KOECHNER IS A DELIGHT!

  7. Pete Holmes says:

    Thanks josh! That’s incredibly nice!

  8. Josh says:

Great episode as usual, Pete! Just love hearing celebrity-types who understand that craft is something you have to work on, and that working on stuff requires passion, humility, and drive — in other words, great to hear well-adjusted people on your show!

Listen, you’ve been talking a lot recently about what your listeners say about your show (“I don’t want to say this, because listeners have been saying that I blah blah blah…”): Some of your listeners think you agree too much with your guests, for example. Some of your listeners have said they’re sick of the questions about faith. Some of your listeners say you repeat yourself too much. Etc.

I say do what you want, Pete! You’re doing great!

It’s great that you respond to e-mails, twitter, and these messages — my wife can’t exactly send an e-mail and have an influence on “Bethany Ever After”, you know? But dude, you’re rockin’ it! For every fan who hates that you are enthusiastic about your guests’ theories (to the point where you seem to agree with them), you’ve got ten that love it! For every fan that hates the conversation about religion, you’ve got ten that love it! Look, I don’t have the numbers, but it’s got to be something like that, right? (c:

    Keep it Crispy!

  9. Marcus says:

Also children aren’t stupid Pete. A friend of mine’s daughter (was probably around 6 at the time) said along the lines of, “How do we know we’re not characters in somebody else’s story book?” That’s like a child’s version of Koechner’s organic video game or something your stoner friend Trussel might say.

Not related, but I watched a program with a physicist that has the theory that we are in fact in a digital simulation (a very advanced one). I think Koechner and most people have heard similar theories like this around. The physicist pointed to “evidence” that there is a limit to how small matter can be (so to him this is like a pixel) the smallest level of detail is metaphorically a pixel. And he has theories about how physics at the tiniest dimensions to him resemble virtual reality.

  10. Marcus says:

I wasn’t going to bother to comment on this, but whatever I feel like it.

The only silly thing about the power outlet and kids “progressive parenting” is the supposedly used phrase, “I’m not making this available to you.” Depending on the toddler’s language skills the parent could say “dangerous” or “too hot” but there is nothing ridiculous about covering the power outlet instead of punishing the child for their curiosity.

Even adults’ products are designed with a lot of care towards the safety of a product and dangerous parts (where the person wouldn’t realize that part could be dangerous to them is covered or there are safety precautions). Look at your power cords for laptop and mobile phones, if they weren’t designed so well many adults probably would have fried themselves already.

So kids don’t understand power outlets yet, that’s not a reason to punish them.

Pete will admit that his childhood feelings were hurt when his father didn’t know he bats left, people won’t admit (because of huge internal and culture forces) that many times their childhood feelings were very hurt when they were yelled at or punished for something they didn’t even understand.

  11. Billy says:

@Charles H on, not to be a stickler here man, but Milk is definitely not a base. Have you ever heard of Lactic Acid? Milk is close to neutral with a pH of around 6.5 or so, but most definitely not a base.

  12. Billy says:

    RASPUTIN!

So weird because I too was struggling to think of his name Sunday when i was watching Game of Thrones & trying to compare him to Melisandre.

  13. ymiwfan says:

I’d be very surprised if 2.5 men has more female fans than male fans.

I also seriously doubt that women drive primetime viewing in general. For very long it has basically been if a show or movie is slightly more targeted for men (e.g. action movies) both men and women will watch it, if it is more for women, just women will watch it (e.g. sex and the city). There are some exceptions.

  14. Alec says:

I’m gonna get all serious and gross and mention that organic food isn’t just about it not having weird Monsanto fertilizers and pesticides coated on the outsides of your veggie or fruit. It’s also about not having all that stuff wash off after a rain storm and screw up the ecosystem downstream.

And besides, you should wash your produce anyway. What do you think farmers are using if they’re not buying high-powered stuff from those megacorps? They’re using good old fashioned shit on the fields. In some cases, they use human waste extracted from septic tanks.

  15. David LeFebvre says:

This is one of the best episodes yet! Koechner seems like a model human being, in addition to being hilarous. Well done by both Pete and David.

  16. jay says:

One of the best yet. Keeping it mad krispy!

  17. Julia Hays says:

P.S. Completely off topic… I just died laughing after realizing my little brother changed my “website” on my Nerdist avatar to the music video for We’re Not Gonna Take It. Weird indeed.

  18. Julia Hays says:

I really enjoyed listening to this. I was lucky enough to meet David Koechner a few months ago, and he’s one of the nicest people I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing. If you have him on the show again (though as the new co-host, I’m sure he will be) be sure to ask him about how he met his wife. It’s one of those super cute, ‘it was meant to be’ kind of stories.

  19. Charles H says:

Only 3 mins in and just had to say milk is a base bro, thus Wendy’s delicious hand spun ice’d cream is as well.

  20. Matt says:

Organic video game? ORGANIC VIDEO GAME?! David Koechner is blowing brains out like Dirty Harry.

  21. Eric Odorczyk says:

Oh man was this ever a great episode. Although I feel sorry for Katie and all the crap she had to take. Keep up the great work of produceing all of the Nerdist Industries podcasts. You don’t receive enough gratitude for all the behind the scenes work that you do. Thanks!

Also Pete, why aren’t you promoting your show at Bonnaroo? Should be one crazy weekend. I can’t wait!

  22. highwyre237 says:

    I miss your musk
