This was the best 2 plus hours I have spent in a while.  You guys talked about all the shit in my head all day everyday.  Love an intellectual conversation.  Also, never made the connection of Superman and the Jew, love it. Still hate Superman, but a new way to look at it.   I feel like I walked away with a book list to read also.  Great stuff.

Hell yes! I loved this episode (actually I’m only 1:12 into it), discovered the podcast via discovering Rory Scovel on a friend’s recommendation (then saw his bits on The Pete Holmes Show on YouTube and discovered Pete Holmes) and have listened to many episodes over the past months. (I’m immersing myself in comedy lately and have started doing standup – I come out of songwriting and philosophy.) This one moved me to make this comment for some reason.
Oh man, just thanks for everything (now I’m semi-addressing Pete Holmes I guess, but still using his name and… what the fuck is this comment even, why am I doing this… feels right though, and now complete).

  3. James says:

I love the podcast, but this episode was so painful to listen through. Larry Charles made no attempt to discuss complex issues with any nuance, instead just spewing out “facts” with no basis in scholarship. This is the same style of discourse which religious extremists use.

  4. Josh says:

Wow. I could listen to this guy all day. What a great conversation! Also, it cracks me up every time Pete gets so excited to abbrev a thing that he does it wrong. “Genesis — The Book of J!” Tots hilars!

  5. Dylan says:

The guy Pete was thinking of with the dad that was a performer was probably Steve Martin if anyone else was wondering.

  6. Brian says:

(in regards to the cup thing)
When I was playing in high school, we didn’t wear cups either.  It wasn’t because it wasn’t cool, or anything.  It was because it would often get in the way when running and making cuts.  And if the cup slips or goes out of place, you don’t want to be going hard, adjusting in the crotch in front of a massive audience.

  7. Alicia says:

This was a great ep Pete!  I loved the discussion (discush?) about God and what this all means.  Larry Charles is the man and I’m so thankful you introduced him to us through your podcast.

This episode was a straight up gift. Thank you, Pete & Mr. Charles — after a crummy day contemplating depressing elections & the decline of civilization, hearing two hilarious, geniusy, thoughtful fellas discuss, well, everything — it made the world feel right again.  Sooooo crispy.  🙂

  9. Gwen says:

This episode is like MANNA FROM HEAVEN! Joking aside (and trying to think straight after taking Benedryl)… this episode was like food for the part of myself that yearns for philosophical and life discussions that never gets fed. I seriously felt more alive after listening to it. Is that too much? I’m not a wack-a-doodle, I swear.

  10. JT says:

Great episode. I tend to love all the episodes but the ones based around existentialism really tickle my fancy.
I would, however, like to throw into the ring the idea that the “argument of silence” for Jesus’ existence isn’t widely accepted for the fact that there is hardly any evidence for anyone who existed back then. Most evidence for any historical figures around then only exists in the form of later references. Socrates is a great example of a similar case. We only know of him through references by Plato & Xenophon. This is just for the sake of talk. Loved the episode and this man seems like an absolute and endless wealth of knowledge and ideas.

I just watched a whole special on Jesus and his life…I think its fact that he was a real person…I could be wrong? I am not arguing, I like to talk about this stuff as well 🙂

      • jacobgripes says:

I think there’s a consensus in academia that Jesus was a real dude. And while (if I remember correctly) there are a few other points agreed upon, most details of his life are disputed. Check out historicity of jesus on wikipedia.
