ha the story of you guys (Emily and Kumail) staying home but telling people you’re away is awesome. Try this during christmas, it’s the fucking best!
These podcasts seems like a way for people to feel like they have really good friends that they can talk about vulnerable stuff to (WTF, YMIW, This American Life, etc.). These are proxy friends! Go out and talk to people! No matter why you think you’re lonely (that is, if you primarily rely on podcasts for ‘meaningful conversations’), it’s all something you can do something about. You can have an even more beautiful conversation with people you actually know and put the effort into getting to know and loving them even when they suck and especially when they’re doing great.
Go get unlonely! Risk getting to know someone instead of plugging in to some pseudo celebrities talking about therapy talking points. I honestly mean this as a commentary on podcast culture and not to blast Pete and his guest. I’m glad he provides this for people (including me! thank you 🙂 ). But it’s too easy to hear someone else be vulnerable and relish in the cathartic feeling of that when it takes so much more to be the one who’s vulnerable. Plus doing it yourself is so much more rewarding.
Also can anyone find footage of the hippo funeral?? I’m having a hard time confirming this though I found one other article that mentions the Animal Planet special…
I can see why this is one of Pete’s favorite’s – now it’s one of mine too.
I don’t know that I’ve ever heard someone whose views on religion and god/the devil mirror mine so closely, and was able to articulate it so perfectly, as Emily has – something else I will take away from this is the idea of indifference ruling being the worst thing – completely agreed.

Just want to say that I’ve listened to a lot of this show, and thank you for the honesty, and for finding humour in that honesty. I don’t really know what I’m talking about, but to me when comedy is informed in that way – that is the best. I really feel like I take a lot away from every episode.

This podcast made me feel all warm and fuzzy and my face hurt at times from big smiles/ laughter. I was skeptical of how much I’d enjoy the show with a ‘non-comedian’ interviewee, but I found Emily to be hilarious and delightful! (Pete’s podcasts have hooked me on the word delightful). I think I may actually go back and listen to this one again. Thanks for a great episode!
I didn’t think this ep was weird at all. I will voice what is apparently the minority opinion that I felt like I was listening to giggling schoolgirls. The show usually works best when the guest calls Pete on his bs, like Chelsea, Nick, TJ or Burr did, just to name a few. You guys obvi had a blast recording it, but it’s mostly inside jokes and you had to be there kind of stuff.
I was skeptical before listening, but yes, this is one of my favorite episodes next to the Demetri Martin and T.J. Miller ones. I feel like sometimes the guests shy away from the heavier topics (death and God and the universe) and either give them only cursory treatments or use them as springboards to comedy. I can see why it makes some people uncomfortable to make themselves vulnerable by exposing their beliefs in a public forum, where they are subject to public scrutiny and ridicule, but Emily was so open and honest and insightful that it really gave Pete (and the listener) a lot to chew on. I love her perspective on God and the devil and her openness about her coma experience–maybe you could have her on again? I could have listened for another few hours at least.
1:18:55 Pete, the “I’m Kumail and Emily’s placeholder kid” idea needs to be a screenplay! It’s such a great premise. It’s almost the spiritual sequel to I Love you Man.
I have a theory now after listening to this podcast that there is a constant occurrence in peoples lives where they create forced serendipity with their iPod playlists.
If you have certain preferences and lifestyles, your music choice will reflect that mental pattern. There is nothing cosmic about being a vegan and then hearing a folk singer sing about not eating meat while you are complaining about the USDA regulations with another vegan friend for example.
I find it fun, but not cosmic. Thanks for touching on that for brief moment in the podcast. Technology, being an entity created on the terrestrial plane, cannot evolve to spiritual heights because it was created by limited, finite beings. Therefore, the evolved connection to our destinies and future events will only be simple prerequisites and not complex conduits to an experience on fleshed out in signs. I believe in God, just not my iPod.

When they were talking about going out and picking someone up, I found the way Pete’s voice lilted up when he said “maybe not the butt…but maybe” was possibly the funniest thing I’ve ever heard.

Mike- you are correct, you shouldn’t ever put 100% of yourself into any one thing, but you should put 100% effort into everything you do. Absolutely. Go big or go fuck yourself.
Andrew- Your coma question is a good one, but for me, it was kinda the same thing as knowing, even if things are totally normal in a dream, that you are dreaming. There’s just some weird, underwater, dreamlike movement that you realize is gone once you’re awake. And I didn’t even mention how they only let me eat ice at first and I thought it was fruit flavored!
Also, that is quite a scoundrel question, but no, I’m not scared Kumail’s going to leave me as he gets more and more successful. …. I was going to go into a lot of detail on that, but some things should be left unsaid, I suppose.

Yes, only a rude uncouth swine of a scoundrel like myself would have asked such a question. I don’t know why I only imagined Pete seeing the question and presumably never even mentioning it to you. Obvioulsy anyone could see it and why wouldn’t you be watching the comments for what was your show as well. Had I thought it through, I would not have, in essence, asked YOU, such a rude question. I appologize.

1)You should have asked Emily how she knew she wasn’t still in the coma/made her believe she still was.
2)Try to explain more of the inside joke stuff, at least a quick summary of the references. otherwise it drives you crazy
3)You should put YMIW or something at the beginning of the episode title to indicate what podcast it is because in a playlist (like for recently downloaded podcasts) the podcast title disappears, making it less likely to be selected and listened to if it just says “emily gordon” rather than YMIW-Emily Gordon or Emily Gordon-Made It Weird.

Amazing podcast! I love Pete and I love Emily…she has been the nicest person ever whenever i’ve seen/met/spoke to her at Nerdmelt. My only comment is on the “being 100% in comedy” topic.
My theory is that you shouldn’t invest 100% of yourself into anything, but you should do that thing 100% if it’s what you love and are passionate about. Be it career or relationship or hobby.
