You Made It Weird #22: Emily Gordon

Pete sits down with one of his best fwendz in the world, Emily Gordon, writer/blogger/producer and wife to one of Pete’s other best fwendz in the world, Kumail Nanjiani, and breaks just about everything Pete cares about wide open: life, love, the whole deal. It’s all in here. Pete says this is his favorite episode (although he admits he shouldn’t play favorites) but “fuck it: this is the best.” Get crispy, weirdos!!

ha the story of you guys (Emily and Kumail) staying home but telling people you’re away is awesome. Try this during christmas, it’s the fucking best!

  2. Sophie says:

These podcasts seems like a way for people to feel like they have really good friends that they can talk about vulnerable stuff to (WTF, YMIW, This American Life, etc.). These are proxy friends! Go out and talk to people! No matter why you think you’re lonely (that is, if you primarily rely on podcasts for ‘meaningful conversations’), it’s all something you can do something about. You can have an even more beautiful conversation with people you actually know and put the effort into getting to know and loving them even when they suck and especially when they’re doing great.

Go get unlonely! Risk getting to know someone instead of plugging in to some pseudo celebrities talking about therapy talking points. I honestly mean this as a commentary on podcast culture and not to blast Pete and his guest. I’m glad he provides this for people (including me! thank you 🙂 ). But it’s too easy to hear someone else be vulnerable and relish in the cathartic feeling of that when it takes so much more to be the one who’s vulnerable. Plus doing it yourself is so much more rewarding.

  3. choy says:

Also can anyone find footage of the hippo funeral?? I’m having a hard time confirming this though I found one other article that mentions the Animal Planet special…

  4. choy says:

I can see why this is one of Pete’s favorite’s – now it’s one of mine too.

I don’t know that I’ve ever heard someone whose views on religion and god/the devil mirror mine so closely, and was able to articulate it so perfectly, as Emily has – something else I will take away from this is the idea of indifference ruling being the worst thing – completely agreed.

“Catapult straight into a volcano”, as Pete says 🙂

  5. Ash1111 says:

    Complimenting.

    also

    to restate:

    I love Pete

but i think he borderline hits on all women on his show

and since I love Kumail, and theyre such close friends, i found it borderline distasteful in this instance.

  6. Tim says:

I don’t know if Ash1111 was complimenting, trolling, or is a Nigerian Prince that needs some help.

Pete, this podcast is one of my faves too. Emily is a delight.

  7. Ash1111 says:

    feck yeeoo

    dear sir,

I respect you a great deal. I have followed a great deal of the majority of your work, and thats barely the best of it. I intend to, in goodness and in imperative badness, follow your works until i have surpassed you, which, as it is currently aligned, is an impossibility.
That said, you are clearly weezing the sweet and sacred juice of the far superior (to you, I, and any person weve ever met) Kumail Nanjiani

This, in my onion, and for the (admittedly temporary) time being

    Is disgusting

I take relish in your brutal and abrasive failure

Heres to hoping you grow outof your current terribleness

I have much faith in you

  8. HaileeJo says:

Oh my gosh, I love your friendship so much. Kumail, Emily, and Pete. You guys are so cute.

  9. Bobby G says:

No Pete, Emily is the lovingly Comedy big Sister, not mom whats wrong with you.

  10. Brandon MacDonald says:

Just want to say that I’ve listened to a lot of this show, and thank you for the honesty, and for finding humour in that honesty. I don’t really know what I’m talking about, but to me when comedy is informed in that way – that is the best. I really feel like I take a lot away from every episode.

  11. Graham says:

I have to get up for work in two hours but I couldn’t stop listening. Damn you for making this great show…

  12. Sarah R says:

This podcast made me feel all warm and fuzzy and my face hurt at times from big smiles/ laughter. I was skeptical of how much I’d enjoy the show with a ‘non-comedian’ interviewee, but I found Emily to be hilarious and delightful! (Pete’s podcasts have hooked me on the word delightful). I think I may actually go back and listen to this one again. Thanks for a great episode!

  13. Fin says:

I didn’t think this ep was weird at all. I will voice what is apparently the minority opinion that I felt like I was listening to giggling schoolgirls. The show usually works best when the guest calls Pete on his bs, like Chelsea, Nick, TJ or Burr did, just to name a few. You guys obvi had a blast recording it, but it’s mostly inside jokes and you had to be there kind of stuff.

  14. Eric says:

I was skeptical before listening, but yes, this is one of my favorite episodes next to the Demetri Martin and T.J. Miller ones. I feel like sometimes the guests shy away from the heavier topics (death and God and the universe) and either give them only cursory treatments or use them as springboards to comedy. I can see why it makes some people uncomfortable to make themselves vulnerable by exposing their beliefs in a public forum, where they are subject to public scrutiny and ridicule, but Emily was so open and honest and insightful that it really gave Pete (and the listener) a lot to chew on. I love her perspective on God and the devil and her openness about her coma experience–maybe you could have her on again? I could have listened for another few hours at least.

  15. josh says:

1:18:55 Pete, the “I’m Kumail and Emily’s placeholder kid” idea needs to be a screenplay! It’s such a great premise. It’s almost the spiritual sequel to I Love you Man.

  16. Colin White says:

I have a theory now after listening to this podcast that there is a constant occurrence in peoples lives where they create forced serendipity with their iPod playlists.

If you have certain preferences and lifestyles, your music choice will reflect that mental pattern. There is nothing cosmic about being a vegan and then hearing a folk singer sing about not eating meat while you are complaining about the USDA regulations with another vegan friend for example.

I find it fun, but not cosmic. Thanks for touching on that for brief moment in the podcast. Technology, being an entity created on the terrestrial plane, cannot evolve to spiritual heights because it was created by limited, finite beings. Therefore, the evolved connection to our destinies and future events will only be simple prerequisites and not complex conduits to an experience on fleshed out in signs. I believe in God, just not my iPod.

Hope you see this Pete, love the show. Continue to make it weird.

  17. Charles says:

I think Jeselnik could be nicknamed Roast Master Colonel.

  18. Chris says:

When they were talking about going out and picking someone up, I found the way Pete’s voice lilted up when he said “maybe not the butt…but maybe” was possibly the funniest thing I’ve ever heard.

    This whole episode was great.

  19. Pete Holmes says:

Thanks everyone!! So glad you enjoyed as much as I did. #crispy4life

  20. Nikki says:

Lovely! Great podcast, so great you had Emily on!

  21. odin42 says:

Gah. Fantastic. I love Emily, i cant wait every monday morning to hear the indoor kids and i get a double dose of her today. Another great episode, hearing you guys talk about hanging makes me wish i was in your circle of friends. You’re both awesome.

  22. Emily says:

Hey look Andrew, we both made it weird! No apologies necessary, let’s high five instead!

  23. Emily says:

Good lord Andrew, scale back the sarcasm, I was just addressing your comments, not insulting you! I like when people ask questions!

    • Wasn’t being sarcastic. I really was stupid enough to think, for whatever reason, that you wouldn’t see it, and I really do appologize. And now I apologize for trying to be cute rather than just clear in my previous apology.

  24. Lucia says:

This was awesome Pete. Thank you.

  25. Emily says:

Hi Weirdos! Thanks for all your lovely comments! A couple of things for you…

Mike- you are correct, you shouldn’t ever put 100% of yourself into any one thing, but you should put 100% effort into everything you do. Absolutely. Go big or go fuck yourself.

Andrew- Your coma question is a good one, but for me, it was kinda the same thing as knowing, even if things are totally normal in a dream, that you are dreaming. There’s just some weird, underwater, dreamlike movement that you realize is gone once you’re awake. And I didn’t even mention how they only let me eat ice at first and I thought it was fruit flavored!
Also, that is quite a scoundrel question, but no, I’m not scared Kumail’s going to leave me as he gets more and more successful. …. I was going to go into a lot of detail on that, but some things should be left unsaid, I suppose.

    Thanks for listening everyone!

    • Yes, only a rude uncouth swine of a scoundrel like myself would have asked such a question. I don’t know why I only imagined Pete seeing the question and presumably never even mentioning it to you. Obvioulsy anyone could see it and why wouldn’t you be watching the comments for what was your show as well. Had I thought it through, I would not have, in essence, asked YOU, such a rude question. I appologize.

  26. Maron would have asked her if she was scared Kumail would become too successful and find someone else among all those options fame brings. But Marc Maron is an uncouth scoundrel.

  27. 1)You should have asked Emily how she knew she wasn’t still in the coma/made her believe she still was.

2)Try to explain more of the inside joke stuff, at least a quick summary of the references. otherwise it drives you crazy

3)You should put YMIW or something at the beginning of the episode title to indicate what podcast it is because in a playlist (like for recently downloaded podcasts) the podcast title disappears, making it less likely to be selected and listened to if it just says “emily gordon” rather than YMIW-Emily Gordon or Emily Gordon-Made It Weird.

  28. Mark says:

    OMG I LOVE Emily!

    Indoor Kids rock!

  29. Spray-Tan says:

This episode is tied for best with the Chelsea Peretti YMIW.
They can really counter analyze your personality when you want to get deep.
Am i the only one who thinks Pete should get his parents on this podcast, take the weirdness up to 11?

  30. Hector says:

Wow you guys wrinkled my brain. Listening to you this episode was so enlightening – thank you for opening up and putting so much of yourselves out there

  31. Josh says:

Holy crap what a crazy episode! Crazy in a good way! Wow, lucid dreams from a 12 day coma? That should be a novel. Seriously. I would definitely read a long, long story about a comedy nerd trying to escape a dreamscape with the floating, disembodied head of Kareem Abdul Jabbar and a man with jolly ranchers for arms.

  32. Ben Clarkson says:

“I want to go to a hippo funeral.”

    Best quote.

  33. Rob P says:

Awesome podcast i love emily shes awesome and kumail too and pete aaaaa good times .

  34. Julia Hays says:

If I ever form a band, it will be called Hippo Funeral.

  35. Brandon says:

You two just charmed my pants off. I’m pantsless. Hippo Funeral made me cry. Crying pantsless.

  36. Amazing podcast! I love Pete and I love Emily…she has been the nicest person ever whenever i’ve seen/met/spoke to her at Nerdmelt. My only comment is on the “being 100% in comedy” topic.

My theory is that you shouldn’t invest 100% of yourself into anything, but you should do that thing 100% if it’s what you love and are passionate about. Be it career or relationship or hobby.

I hope that makes sense. Keep up the amazing work..

  37. Tyler says:

Pete’s Kumail impression has me dying trying to stifle laughter in my office.

  38. Brandon says:

This was awesome! And not the “skateboards and milkshakes are awesome” kind of awesome, but the angelic, life touching kind.

  39. JKingKong says:

We need to bring the “Streets Of Rage 2” Style back! … Wait … was it ever in style?!

  40. Gorson says:

You are a pair of delightful fuckers, thank you.
