I think I’m just going to mention Richard Linklater until Pete finally references him on the show. They are so spiritually similar in what they cover I feel Pete would have at least referenced one of his movies by now.
Anyhoo in ‘Waking Life’, the Ethan Hawke character references a Tim Leary idea about living on in dreams when we die
“I heard that Tim Leary said as he was dying that he was looking forward to the moment when his body was dead but his brain was still alive. You know they say that there’s still six to twelve minutes of brain activity after everything else is shutdown”
Obviously the astrology stuff was retarded, but I’m actually glad that Pete has these kinds of morons on all the time. Making someone listen to Josh’s incoherent rambling about energy and electromagnetic waves is the fastest way to show them how stupid this New Age bullshit is.
Let’s maybe try a fun little rule in the future: you don’t get to use words that you can’t define, like “energy,” “dimension,” etc. I’d love to hear one of these crackpots try to make their beliefs not sound stupid when they can’t wrap them in scientific-sounding nonsense.
Or just live your life as well.
But I just love how Pete adapts to his guests and their positions. He’s perfect for this show. Take this episode vs. the Bo Burnham episode, for example. Anyone who has the same views as Bo talking to someone like Josh about astrology would be 2 1/2 hours of awkwardness, but Pete is just so open-minded, even about conflicting beliefs.
When I first heard Pete say that he loves talking to guests about their beliefs, I’m pretty sure I had an audible, guttural reaction. But he’s just so open-minded that it’s so entertaining, and I think it encourages me to be more open-minded when listening to someone like Josh (whom I love) talking what I believe to be utter nonsense.
Not to mention *actual scientists*. But I thought of Bo just because he’s so outspoken and frank.
So, finally, I’m all caught up and feel like I can finally join in! Thanks, Pete, for an awesome year of listening and for so much insight. Thanks, weirdos, also for all the great comments; you’ve made it even better. Looking forward to jumping in…
