Pete – the way you sleep in segments was interesting – the way you talked about it seemed like it just happened naturally, which I just discovered is thought to be the pattern our bodies are supposed to follow according to some research: http://themindunleashed.org/2014/10/ancestors-didnt-sleep-like-wrong.html – so you may be on to something!

  2. Justin James says:

This was SUCH a good podcast. I learned a lot of stuff about Mark Paul! Saved by the Bell was my favorite growing up and I was Zack Morris for Halloween in 1993!!

If you ever find yourself googling yourself or reading comments again Mark…. Just wanted you to know that smoking pot and drinking doesnt change my view on you at all. I like you more because of your honesty. and the episode was powerful at the time and you were great in it

  3. Jeffrey says:

Pete Holmes, MPG, BFF? These guys have great chemistry. Oh Petey, you’ve done it again. Great podcast.

  4. Mema Sifa says:

I got a lot out of this podcast. Zack Morris is even cooler than I thought he was, and I already thought he was pretty cool.

  5. Crystal Hornback says:

Great interview. I think it’s my favorite so far. Thank you!

  6. Sporin says:

Only at the halfway point but easily one of the best YMIWs in a while.

  7. Tiffany says:

Regarding the topic of “mommy wives”:

I always find it interesting when this term/topic comes up in your podcasts. I get what you are explaining, completely, but the problem I have with that term and explaining it in that way is it puts the blame on the wife instead of the husband, when it may or may not have been a 50/50 thing.

You often described how you needed to grow up and become a man and never did that with your ex-wife because you had a “mommy wife,” but was that not YOUR problem to overcome, not hers?

In my opinion, if a person believes they’ve really moved on and matured, they might be willing to start taking some responsibility for the state the relationship was in when talking about it in retrospect — which makes me think “child husband” might be the more appropriate descriptor.

Obviously outside factors played major roles in your particular relationship coming to an end, but to specifically coin a negative term for the wives of immature men seems unbalanced.

    Just a thought.

    • Tyler says:

I can’t speak for Pete but if you’re trying to invite a guest into a conversation, like he was with MP, placing the blame on the guest isn’t going to be as successful a conversation-starter as deflecting some of the pressure and blame a little bit.
You’re right, the terminology could suggest the “fault” is with the wife. The other side  of that thought is: Pete can only speak from his own experience and in his experience she was his “mommy” as much or more than she was his wife. I don’t ever get the impression he’s placing the blame on her nor do I get the impression he’s implying he was without fault.
I guess I never thought he was saying “mommy wife” – I always thought it was “mommy/wife.” To me, one phrase would describe a wife who has been reduced to a motherly role and the second phrase describes a wife who also mothers a person who needs mothering – a child. I always thought of it with the caveat of “Pete’s a child and she’s doing the mothering his immaturity calls for.”
It’s interesting you (I’m assuming female because of the name “Tiffany”) thought “mommy wife” was negative toward the female – implying she mothered him into becoming a child – while I (a male) thought it was negative toward the male – his immaturity forcing her to be his reluctant “mommy.”
I was only intending on posting that first paragraph but you got my brain examining itself as I started typing. A brain observing itself is bound to implode, make some realizations, or both. Both on my end, I think.

      An interesting discussion, for sure.

  8. Nic says:

I liked this episode a lot. Mark and Pete seemed to be on such a solid wavelength, both with their humor and their general conversation.

  9. James says:

Fuck, my marriage is the exact same as theirs. I don’t know how to pay bills. Now I’m going to worry about divorce and my testosterone constantly. 🙁

Great episode, though. MP is even cooler than I thought.

  10. emilyD says:

I totally enjoyed this episode…though I would caution Pete about one thing: don’t refer to yourself as vegan if you’re using honey. I’m not vegan and don’t take offense to this, but I know this can be an issue. Just sayin’…

  11. Jeff says:

Awesome episode! There’s a great balance between Pete and MPG with questions flying both ways. Never a dull moment the entire chat.

  12. Eric C. says:

A Toonces the Driving Cat reference by Pete–so great.

  14. Daniel J says:

PS – I personally enjoy the stuff on nutrition

  15. Daniel J says:

MP has always been one of the world’s biggest movie stars/ celebs – at least in my eyes. Was really nice to hear that he’s super grounded, friendly, thoughtful, etc. What a natural, warm dialogue. I’ve listened to about 100 of these and this is easily one of my favs, for sure. Looking forward to more MP/PH sketches in the future. Pete, step your game up and arrive prepared for the next one haha

  16. Abby says:

Such an adorable episode. MPG turned into my Jewish mother at the end with all the probing about why Pete isn’t married, doesn’t have kids, why isn’t he emotionally connected, etc. I was dying laughing.

  17. Anthony K says:

As a big fan of the podcast/Pete/Saved By The Bell, this is one of my favorite episode. Classic.
(Just wish Pete was more open to him about his girl, yo. GOTTA GIVE TO GET PETE!)

PS Mark-Paul Gosselaar is a cool-ass, real dude.

  18. Adam S says:

Another great ep, especially for any SBTB fans.

I think the listeners love to hear Pete make the SBTB references, but it’s good to know MPG isn’t irritated by it (like other 90s actors might be).

Pete, you should post some of your smoothie recipes. I too think your ingredients list is ridiculous, but I would still love to try it out.

  19. Kaitlynn says:

Okay, I am dying to know. WHO IS PETEY PANTS’ L-D (LONG DISTANCE) GIRL?!? I am trying to think but as the last episode I listened to (have been going back and forth) was Shelby Fero, now she is who I think of when he mentions the girl. Does that sentence make sense? Someone help me.

  20. Lisa says:

Okay, so not that I’m an expert or anything, but aren’t Molly and MDMA the exact same thing? I’m pretty sure ‘molly’ is just cool kid slang for the exact same drug that MPG said he used to do when Paul Oakenfold and all those guys were real big. Your confusion makes me confused! But seriously, what a fun episode! MP is super down to clown and PH is obvs as fun as always. PETE – what happened to your openess?! I know you likely want to protect the privacy of this mystery woman, but INQUIRING MINDS MUST KNOW THINGS.

  21. Jamjo says:

Fantastic episode. Awesome to hear how into nutrition MPG is but damn, who has time to assemble that list of ingredients for Pete’s morning smoothie? It’s like a scavenger hunt!

  22. Christie says:

Thank you for this episode! It was wonderful. Growing up I was a huge Saved by the Bell fan and it was so great to hear MPG’s voice and learn all about his life.

Also, I love the long episodes and hearing about nutrition. Never stop.

  23. April Austin says:

Great episode! I was one of those tween girls who grew up watching every episode of Saved by the Bell. Loved the refrences!

  24. adri says:

Ah I liked this one, it was nice to have a lighter episode in here after long week. Additionally, I love the longer format. I listen to the whole thing all the time! I’m just as surprised at how much time has passed as the guest it usually. Keep it up Pete, killin’ it

  25. J.Smith says:

So much fun. Please bring him back again.

  26. Pete Holmes says:

    Thanks guys!

Yeah I stopped taking those blocker things, thank you for the info!! 🙂

    MPG FTW!

  27. lala says:

Best. Episode. EVER. MP + PH = dreamy duo. Please more Streetfighter sketches & double please a podcast rePete. 😀 You two really made magic (castle) together. I’m seriously giddy from listening — if Pete asked the last time I laughed really hard, I would answer *This Episode* ! Thanks, guys.

  28. Migs says:

Awesome episode! I don’t get why Pete hesitates to talk about the stuff this podcast is meant to bring up?! It’s always great to hear from different people’s pov. MPG sounded like a great guy. Good one Petey Pants!

  29. James says:

ugh, does pete ever not spiral into dick-talk? so much more interesting stuff to talk about.

  30. Grant says:

^Nick’s right. I’ve used some anabolic steroids and hormones are not as intuitive as you’d think, especially the psychological effects.

  31. Dave says:

Mitch Hedberg made the Waiter/chef comparison

  32. Nick says:

Loved the episode! I thought it was hilarious to hear about MPG’s thoughts on his role in DARE. Just one note about “estrogen blockers” or whatever supplement Pete was talking about taking. I think it is generally better not to toy with your endocrine system, but as a matter of fact, the body can naturally convert testosterone into estradiol. In the brain estradiol mediates many male-typical behaviors (presumably the ones Pete is hoping to enhance). So, taking anything that blocks the action of estrogens in the brain might have the opposite effect than the one Pete wants…
