  1. laura says:

In general, doctors don’t know much at all about nutrition, as they receive very little specific diet/nutrition training as a whole.

http://www.care2.com/greenliving/how-much-nutrition-do-doctors-know.html There is some interesting stuff here.

I don’t know why I am commenting on this old episode that i somehow missed. but yeah.

  2. Megan says:

Didn’t he say he turned 15 15 years ago?

  3. kursten says:

I googled, fairly deep, and I can’t figure out how old Johnny is.

  4. Andre says:

For easy access to the “WE ARE WORKING TODAY!” bit:

    You’re welcome.

  5. Ben says:

About 0:40:30 for everyone looking for the “We Workin today” bit to show someone else.

  6. Mike says:

Pete – I’ve been listening to your podcast for years and I found this episode to be my personal favorite. I was diagnosed with Colitis six years ago so I found Johnny to be incredibly relatable, not to mention hilarious. It’s nice to hear somebody talk so openly about this disease. Thanks for the awesome free podcast and keep it Xpy!

  7. Patty Marvel says:

@Adam – Thanks, Adam! BTW, the folks over in the Nerdist podcast comment section are pretty cool too, especially Jetpack Blues and Three Toes of Fury.

  8. Adam says:

@Patty–Thank you for your support in asserting my non-doucheyness. I get concerned that I might be acting overly seriously in regards to a podcast called “You Made It Weird”.

As for probiotics, there is a lot of conflicting literature as to which bacteria are best for to assist in various digestive ailments. Now, I’m not a medical doctor or a nutritionist, so I am not the most reliable source for this information and I’d caution you to take any advice I give with a grain of salt. Principally though, probiotics are really only supposed to be helpful in calming the digestive system and possibly improving bowel movements. Yogurt is a common way to introduce “good” bacteria into your body and several companies claim that their yogurt products are the “best” (see Activia). Again though, I don’t really know how effective these treatments are and, if you aren’t having any stomach problems, I don’t recommend that use them for that purpose. Of course, I recommend that you see a doctor if you do have stomach problems.

Going to your question on Greek yogurt vs “regular” yogurt…I really don’t know. Greek yogurt does have a higher protein content (with lower sugar and fat content) than does “regular” yogurt, but I am unsure about the presence of good bacteria. Activia (again!) has claims that their Greek yogurt is cultured with bacteria that make it probiotic, but proper research has yet to be conclusively performed. Still, if you want a yogurt that has a decent amount of protein, Greek yogurt is probably the best place to go.

At the end of the day though, it’s hard to say which probiotic products have any level of efficacy and are proper to treat specific ailments. NPR has a nice short article talking about this (http://www.npr.org/blogs/thesalt/2012/07/09/156381323/confusion-at-the-yogurt-aisle-time-for-probiotics-101), but please keep your skepticism alive.

Thanks for your reply! And I love how you called him “Petey Pants”. My favorite is probably still “Good Ol’ Pete”.

  9. Patty Marvel says:

@Adam – Please don’t apologize for “being all downer-ish.” It’s the douche-bag-y posts that tend to put people off as far as I can tell and yours was by no means douche-bag-y. I found it helpful and vaguely recall some of the info you’ve mentioned, but thanks for mentioning it here. I have the terrible feeling ole Petie Pants and some of his guests are getting dodgy health information on line or from other dubious sources rather than from an actual health care worker, which makes me concerned for them, especially Pete.

(Seriously, Sweetie Petie, quit with the juicing! You may be hurting your body and definitely your wallet! Here are some quick and dirty podcasts you should check out regarding wheatgrass juice http://skeptoid.com/episodes/4006 detoxification http://skeptoid.com/episodes/4083 and “cleansing” diets http://skeptoid.com/episodes/4335 . Brian Dunning sites his sources at the bottom of the page if you’d like to do some follow-up. )

Back to Adam – Would Greek yogurt be just as good a source of pro-biotics as “regular” yogurt? I ask because my nutrition therapist at the Cleveland Clinic told me I need more protein in my diet and I won’t see her again for a few weeks to ask about this.

  10. Adam says:

I have to be a negative Nancy, but I’ll try to keep it light.

At least once during the episode (I’m not done yet, because I had to send a message RIGHT NOW) you mentioned that neither of you are doctors. And, although I am impressed with Johnny’s knowledge of the surgeries he went through and his correct advice about colonics), I am a doctor and I have a few things to say.

Eating raw honey is risky. There are bacteria and fungi that can be present in raw honey that may be detrimental to your health. Very small children and babies are recommended to NOT have honey of any sort, as the bacteria which cause botulism have often found to be present. The process by which honey is sterilized (heat) actually does nothing to the flavor or nutrition of the honey, other than eliminating the bacteria/fungi. Filtration can be used to eliminate spores, pollen, and parts of bees (which are often found in honey), but is not necessary to be healthy. My vote? Eat sterilized honey to avoid health hazards. Only eat filtered honey if you don’t want to accidentally eat bee wings.

And the stuff about honey being used as an antibiotic salve? Yep! Some can be. Do you know what works better? A medical cream advised by doctors. Plus, that gives you more honey to eat.

Final note: Most anything labeled as “alternative medicine” is hokus. Seriously. I don’t say this because I’m being “paid off” or because “I don’t trust anything outside the norm”. I say it because numerous NUMEROUS studies have proven them to be ineffective. And these are double-blind ultra rigorous experiments that are conducted by people who are experts in the alternative medicine field.

Final final note: Keep eating pro-biotics (like yogurt) because they’re mostly good for you and help your digestive system. Stop eating “enzymes” or whatever the heck you meant when you were discussing in the part of the episode. Any “enzymes” you eat are destroyed by your stomach acid and do….nothing. Same for the “natural enzymes” in honey. They get destroyed and the only benefit may be in taste.

Final final final note: Sorry for being all downer-ish, but I do have a very emotional response to things that are anti-science and potentially harmful to people. Other than that, I love your show! And looking forward to the TV show very soon!

  11. Jacob says:

    Pete,
Just wanted to say I loved this episode. It was powerful. Also, I don’t know if you exactly take requests but I’d love to hear (a professional comedians thoughts and in particular) your thoughts on Kevin Hart’s special Let Me Explain in theaters. Since so many people are watching this thing and therefore watching stand-up (despite it not being live for this) it’s a neat thing, no?

  12. regulartops says:

colony collapse disorderrrrrr on friday niiieeeyyyyt

  13. dave says:

the 1:20:20 mark and on when they go into the singing and that Christian Country Review bit made me cry. Thank you. Insanely funny

  14. Lisa says:

This podcast is one of the hardest times I’ve ever laughed. I now have a new answer to that question. This episode, forever. I listened to it walking to and from work over the course of a few days and got many a strange glance from a stranger for doing my best and failing hardcore to suppress my guffaws on the street. Johnny Pembies is the goddamn best.

  15. ItsAlrightPodcast says:

If this is what happens when you eat Avacado honey during the show, please talk to Johnny P (who’s also awesome on Duncan Trussell’s podcasts) if he can get you a crate? Big woohoo for this 2hrs 21 min, sweetie Petey!

  16. Megan says:

Hey, so Johnny talked about the human micro-biome a little bit, and there is growing evidence that fecal transplants can cure intestinal problems like c. diff and colitis. There was also a good opinion piece on it in the nytimes recently… http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/07/06/why-i-donated-my-stool/
I think we should just try fecal transplant for everything.. very little downside, and potential easy cures.

  17. David says:

You know you’re getting old when stand up comedians start looking younger. Interesting(and bloody terrifying) hearing about John’s colitis a I was diagnosed with it 5 years ago. Having to go through all that when he was just a kid though – Christ – stuff like that constantly has me asking what the hell is going on here. It doesn;t sit right that we’re built like sufferometers and there’s sooooooooooo much random suffering out there. If there is a god then I’m with Depeche Mode on his comedy stylings.

  18. Adrian says:

PETE! You never explained what the whole flowers thing was about! You guys brought it up numerous times and your bits kept carrying you away from the subject. I was curious the whole time! However, I absolutely loved this episode. Thanks so much! And the quote about bees was from Einstein where he actually says we’d have 4 years after the bees are gone.

  19. Krystin says:

Johnny does a great impression of my dad. “We are WORKIN’ today son! Martin Luther WHAT!?”

  20. Roman says:

    Great episode,

However the remote viewing piece was complete BS…

If anyone actually thinks they perform remote viewing, I implore them to take the Randi Challenge. Anyone who can perform any type of supernatural ability can win $1,000,000. The challenge has been around for decades and not one person has ever won it.

    I wonder why…

  21. Tyler says:

    I love celery!

  22. Broco says:

This episode is pretty much an exercise in drawing out bits.

  23. fruitbat says:

Can’t believe the TV show is almost here! I love getting two episodes a week, but I’ll manage

  24. Justin says:

The eye Buñuel cut into was a calf’s head with makeup on.

  25. Alex says:

Man. Amanda Bynes is lookin’ rough!

  26. Dingus says:

No worries about the new schedule. Looking forward to the new show

  27. Misleading Ninja says:

Completely unaware of Johnny Pembleton before today, but he’s funny as hell!

  28. Gregog says:

“What’s your basis for these wild claims that spit in the eyes of science and our understanding of the universe?”

“My friend told me! He’s been researching it for a long time, I swear! Studies show it!”

    “Which studies?”

“I haven’t read them myself, or researched this at all on my own, or checked his sources. But it’s true I swear!”

Remote viewing is garbage pseudoscience fantasy.

  29. Patty Marvel says:

    Me – “Hmmmmm…he looks familiar…”

    :GOOGLES Johnny Pemberton:

    “Oh, THAT guy!”

Everyone in thread – rinse and repeat.
