You Can Now Play Game Boy Games on Your Apple Watch

The 10-year-old version of me would be amazed at how many ways I can play Game Boy games today. I won’t link to anything here because game emulation is a legal gray area, but I can easily play every Game Boy game that has ever been released on my laptop, my phone, and basically anything I own that has a screen. I don’t own an Apple Watch, but if I did, I’d be able to play Game Boy on that too now, thanks to a brand new emulator (via Gizmodo).

That said, I wouldn’t count on it as being a series retro gaming solution just yet. Even Gabriel O’Flaherty-Chan, who created the “Giovanni” emulator, admits that the creation is more a proof of concept at this point. “As you can see, it’s a bit sluggish and unresponsive, but as a prototype, I think it answers the question of ‘is this possible,'” O’Flaherty-Chan wrote on the project’s website.

The control scheme is also odd, which is to be expected given that the Apple Watch’s only inputs are a tiny touchscreen and the digital crown on the side. Start, Select, and B have their own buttons on the touch screen, while you tap the screen for A, use the crown for Up and Down, and swipe right and left to, well, hit Right and Left.

It’s not the greatest system, but it’s also a Game Boy emulator for Apple Watch, which we hadn’t seen before now. Find more info about it here, and tell us about the strangest platforms you’ve seen Game Boy games emulated on.
