Fans of Supernatural were given a love letter last night. The series hit its 200th episode, and they used the occasion to hug fandom and hit some emotional and meaningful moments between the Winchester brothers. In “Fan Fiction,†Sam and Dean look into a case in Michigan only to stumble upon an all-girls school putting on a Supernatural musical. The brothers reacted in the only way possible:
The director, Marie, based her adaptation on the Supernatural books written by the prophet Chuck Shurley and added some flair of her own. Since the last story Chuck wrote was the season five finale, “Swan Songâ€, she was forced to go off book and embellish the story with robots and ninjas and songs. Like you do. The production was Marie’s unique vision, and as the Winchesters investigated the case and watched rehearsals, the story went super meta.
Marie’s script called out plenty of phrases familiar to the Supernatural fandom family as it went through the road so far: Destiel (and the actresses playing Dean and Castiel were actually a couple), Samulet, a single man tear, boy melodrama, and more. It was hilarious. The show’s done meta before to wonderful effect, but they outdid themselves last night.
As mentioned, the production was a musical and featured songs about Sam and Dean’s life. I’ll be honest. I didn’t expect much from the music, and I was oh so wrong not to believe in the writers. There was a tune about the beginning of the series when Sam was born and the Yellow-Eyed Demon visited titled “The Road So Far”, a song called “A Single Man Tear†about Sam and Dean’s relationship, and a tune belted by stage-Castiel called “I’ll Just Wait Here Then†that played on the subtext between Dean and Castiel’s relationship. The show wrapped up with a moving performance of “Carry On Wayward Son” from the play’s cast.

Within the first few minutes of the episode, I was sure it was gonna blow. I’m definitely not a fan of musicals. So glad they proved me wrong! It’s one of the best episodes they ever made! Easily in the top 10 if not top 5. The singers were surprising good and I actually liked the songs. Overall, I found it really sweet that they reached out to the audience like this and showed that they actually appreciate us as much as we appreciate them.
