There have been a lot of sad and unsettling happenings in the news recently, and we’re not going to list them here to get everybody all upset. What we do need is a fun pick-me-up. We need happiness. We need peace.
Today would have been John Lennon’s 75th birthday, so the timing seems appropriate for that. Yoko Ono seemed to think so too, since today, she attempted to set a world record in Central Park for the largest human peace sign. A Guinness World Records representative was on hand to verify the attendance and determine whether or not the current record–5,814 people, set in Ithica, New York in 2009–was broken.
About 6,000 people were expected to attend, but the representative reported that over 2,000 people took part in the festivities: a lot, but not enough to make history. Still, the day was not a waste, as the attempt got a bunch of people gathered in the park on a gorgeous day for music, drumming, and of course, peace.
While Ono may not have broken a record today, The Beatles themselves still hold over 25 world records as of 2014, including most recorded song–“Yesterday”–and biggest all-time sales for a band. They are directly tied to even more records, including most expensive piano–which was Lennonâs–to the best-selling music video game, The Beatles: Rock Band.
