Whether you’ve just discovered the expansive world of Afrofuturism through Ryan Coogler‘s gorgeous, record smashing Black Panther or you’re a lifelong Octavia Butler fan, it’s likely you’re desperate for new science-fiction landscapes to explore. Luckily, we know what you need: Yohance! The sprawling African space opera began as a comic in 2016; back then, creator Paul Louise-Julie successfully raised $16,000 for the comic through Kickstarter. He’s turned back to the crowdfunding platform to fund an animated Yohance film.
Paul Louis-Julie describes his epic story in the official description: “Yohance is the story of a young but gifted thief who, after stealing a precious crystal, gets embroiled in a century-old battle. Before he knows it, heâs found himself at the center of an intergalactic conflict involving ancient Empires, shadowy personas, bounty hunters, and all the things that make space opera great.” The idea behind this Kickstarter campaign is to launch a series of films that will spread the story of Yohance and expand the universe the creative team has already established.
As you can see from this incredible concept art, Yohance has the potential to become a vibrant, beautiful visual landscape that looks exciting and unlike anything we’ve seen in the world of animated movies. You can back the Kickstarter right here and support what looks to be a fantastic new fantasy world we cannot wait to explore. Are you excited to discover more Afrofuturistic storytelling after Black Panther? Can’t wait to help support this indie film? Let us know below!
