X-MEN Producer Says NEW MUTANTS Will Have ‘Young Adult Vibe’

X-Men: Apocalypse may be the last movie with the X-Men team in the foreseeable future, but it’s far from the last X-Men film. And it’s not all Deadpool, Gambit, and Wolverine 3 for 20th Century Fox. Plans are still underway to bring Marvel’s New Mutants to the big screen, and it could happen fairly soon.

Earlier this week, X-Men producer Simon Kinberg offered an update on the New Mutants movie and how it will be different from the other superhero films from Fox. “Josh Boone and his writing partner are working on the script,” said Kinberg during an interview with IGN. “They’re doing a really nice job of it, and it’s a really cool one, because in many ways, like Deadpool was so different from the mainline X-Men movies, New Mutants… It’s maybe not as different as Deadpool, but it has its own unique, original voice to it…New Mutants has more of a YA [Young Adult] vibe to it.”

That’s not too surprising considering that the current X-Men trilogy has YA superstar Jennifer Lawrence as one of the leading performers. The New Mutants comic book series was created by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod in the ‘80s as the first X-Men spinoff title. It focused on a group of young mutants who were under the tutelage of Professor Xavier. Later in the series, Magneto took over as the lead instructor for the New Mutants before the team was eventually led by Cable.

As noted by Kingberg, the New Mutants has “a very deep bench” of characters to potentially draw upon. Warpath and Sunspot both appeared in X-Men: Days of Future Past, as did Blink, who was associated with the team in the most recent revival of the series. The Deadpool movie also introduced Negasonic Teenage Warhead in a much bigger role than she ever had in the comics. A New Mutants movie would probably be the most logical place to use Negasonic Teenage Warhead again.

If the New Mutants movie keeps the ‘80s setting from X-Men: Apocalypse, then it would also be a good opportunity to bring James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender back as Professor X and Magneto, respectively. Obviously, the focus would shift to the much younger mutants, but both Professor X and Magneto should play some role in the eventual New Mutants movie.
