The release of X-Men: Days of Future Past is just four months away, and this means we’re entering the heavy promotion phase. To that end, Empire Magazine recently unveiled 25 covers, each featuring a character from the film. They began and ended the set of covers with Sentinels, and the look of the future Sentinel ruffled the feathers of some fans.
The newer model differs from those seen in comics. Not surprising, film adaptations mean changes such as this, but the future Sentinel doesn’t have any of the familiar purple and gray look of the original Sentinels. The movie model is sleeker and more futuristic.
Days of Future Past production designer John Myhre discussed the design with Empire:
“They’re biomechanical weapons. We had to come up with what would be the ultimate version that could actually, in principle, stop the X-Men. We started with this idea that they were almost made up of magnetic plates slapped over one another, imagining that the plates could contract or grow, so the Sentinel can be skinny to get through a small space or the plates can open up to become a bigger shape. So they have become virtually unstoppable.”
Sentinels are essentially mutant-hunting machines, so this imagining isn’t out of line. Additionally, the past Sentinels featured in the film are reminiscent of what we see in the comics. At least we’re getting a mix of familiar and new designs instead of no comic book nods at all.
Do you like the look of the future Sentinel? Let us know in the comments.

Has a bit of a phalanx vibe to it
It certainly looks better than a lot of Brian Singer’s other design/costume choices. I don’t see the need to deviate so much from the comics like he regularly does. It can’t get any worse than Quicksilver.
so they’re nimrod. not sure how a sentinel made of magnetic plates could hope to stand a chance against magneto, but i guess we’ll find out? at least they don’t look as bad as quicksilver.
so the future sentinels are nimrod. that’s fine, i guess. not really sure how a machine made up of magnetic plates would fare too well against magneto, but i’m sure we’ll find out.
Perish forbid they include any designs for characters, vehicles, weapons or anything that looks like Jack Kirby designed it.
Looks like a bird like cylon. I am worried production designer John Myhre has total disregard for the X-men comic.
It reminds me of Nimrod…
