If 20th Century Fox’s original plans had remained in place, New Mutants would have been released next month, while X-Men: Dark Phoenix would have arrived this coming November. However, both Marvel Comics movies are getting pushed into 2019âand this news comes just a few weeks after New Mutants had already been delayed. Via Deadline, X-Men: Dark Phoenix will now be released on February 14, 2019. As for New Mutants, it will now be a summer release in August 2, 2019.
New Mutants is said to be more of a horror film than a superhero tale about the next generation of X-Men. The reshoots have previously been rumored to make the movie scarier, or potentially add another character who was left out of the original script. It’s less clear if X-Men: Dark Phoenix will also receive extensive reshoots, or if Fox is hoping to derive some of the success that Deadpool and Black Panther have previously found in February.
Dark Phoenix will mark the second time Fox has attempted to bring the eponymous comic book story into the live-action franchise, following the disappointing X-Men: The Last Stand. Once again, major changes are expected to be made to the canonâfor example, neither Magneto nor Mystique appeared in the comic book version of this tale, whereas Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence are reprising their respective roles for the movie.
