With Ben Affleck Out as Director, is THE BATMAN in Trouble?

Holy guano, Batman! If you were counting on Ben Affleck‘s directorial skills to give us the solo Batman film that we deserve, then you may not have been happy to hear that Batfleck is voluntarily stepping aside as the director to focus on his performance. Sure, Live By Night wasn’t a critical hit like Affleck’s earlier films, Argo and The Town, but it was genuinely intriguing to wonder where he would take the Batman franchise if he had complete control. So, what’s next for The Batman? Today’s Nerdist News is playing the part of the World’s Greatest Detective and investigating the two leading candidates to replace Affleck!

Join host and possible Earth-3 Harley Quinn, Jessica Chobot, as she breaks down the latest developments on The Batman and what they mean going forward. In the initial announcement, Affleck noted that “together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film.” He went on to say, “I am still in this, and we are making it, but we are currently looking for a director. I remain extremely committed to this project, and look forward to bringing this to life for fans around the world.”

Ben Affleck as Batman

Since Affleck is still very much the driving force behind this movie, it seems likely that the new director will be brought in to facilitate Affleck’s vision for the film rather than someone who will reshape it for themselves. So far, two Matts are reportedly the leading contenders: Matt Reeves, from the Planet of the Apes reboot films; and Matt Ross, who made a name for himself as the director of Captain Fantastic and as Gavin Belson on Silicon Valley. Of course, we have our own ideas about who should be on The Batman‘s shortlist of replacement directors. And there’s always the possibility of dark horse candidates as well.

Who do you think should step up as the new director of The Batman? Let’s discuss in the comment section below!
