Will WOLVERINE 3 Be the Most Unconventional Marvel Movie Yet?

Is the final Wolverine movie going to be an anti-Marvel movie, different from all the others? Today’s Nerdist News sinks its adamantium claws into these potentially spoiler-y tidbits to find out!

It’s been a pretty secretive production for Wolver-three-n, but we finally got a poster revealing a brand new title: Logan! A pretty human title for the superhuman, but it seems like that’s the whole plan behind the script. Director James Mangold‘s twitter let us know the film would stand apart from previous superhero movies, and wouldn’t be a “CG fuckathon” like some of the films in the past. I’m not sure who’d be against a Hugh Jackman fuckathon, but I digress. So if not a fuckathon, what exactly could this movie be about?

We know a few things for sure: it’s set in the future, it’s rated R, it co-stars Professor X, Mister Sinister is the main villain, and it’ll partially follow Mark Millar‘s Old Man Logan comic book storyline. And though it hasn’t been confirmed, we’re pretty sure that hand Logan is clutching belongs to X-23, and that she’ll play a part in the film. Also, based on the little bit of the script we’ve seen, it’s clear Logan is a much darker, heavier film. Mangold makes it clear that this is a superhero flick with weight and stakes to the action. “When a character falls out a window, they don’t bounce—they die… And Wolverine is no longer the immortal killing machine he once was. His healing factor is fading on him, meaning he’s in constant pain and drinks a shit-ton to numb it.”

Pretty gritty stuff! Like, beyond the darkness of even the most recent DC movies. But the action still has some fun to it. Logan fights a crew of “bangers,” and warns them not to bother as they beat on him. It’s the lighthearted bad-assery we’ve seen in other flicks about the Canucklehead… until, that is, the Bangers get the better of our drunk hero and lunge on him, stabbing him with knives and even a drill. Yeesh!

Okay, so we’re definitely thinking we’re seeing a strung-out old man Logan, using one last mission to redeem himself, and we’re also guessing that mission involves the apocalypse end-credits scene, in which Essex Corp. snatched Wolverine’s DNA. If Logan learns from Professor X that Mr. Sinister has created a clone named X-23 in the hopes of having his own weapon X, well, the ensuing rescue mission would definitely make for a pretty badass adventure for everyone’s favorite Canucklehead.

But what do you guys think? Are you digging the new title? Does this sound too hyper-violent and heavy compared to the previous movies? Do you think the Fox-Marvel Universe is slowly turning into the cinematic equivalent of Marvel Max? Let’s discuss!
