Considering we’ve been waiting a while for news on God of War IV, it’s not surprising to see that rumors have been running rampant. While news of veteran animator Harry Walton’s (who worked on the Gorgon and Hydra creatures) possible involvement in a God of War cinematic trailer pointed towards more Greek Mythology, there’s another “leak” that’s been making the rounds today that suggests Sony Santa Monica might be diving into the world of Norse Mythology. If that’s true, it means we may finally be in for a refreshing change of pace.
The folks at Nerd Leaks brought the possibility to light (in a post that has since been removed) after uncovering artwork from the personal website of concept artist Finnian MacManus–who according to his LinkedIn account worked on an “unannounced project” at Sony Santa Monica from September 2015 until December 2015.  Luckily, the seemingly always active NeoGAF user Shinobi602 archived a bunch of the images for our viewing pleasure. While we don’t know whether Kratos will be duking it out with the likes of Loki, Thor, and Odin, the images show a bearded Kratos (YES) carrying an axe, and what looks to be the mythical Birfröst Rainbow Bridge.
The concept art reportedly mentions Kratos by name, and reveals that he will be visiting two of the 9 worlds tied to Norse mythology, including: Alfheim (aka “Land of the Fairies), which is home of the Light Elves; and Vanaheimr, which is home to the Vanir. With the axe shown of in the image above, Kratos will supposedly be able to use it to cut vines and create bridges/walkways.
Of course, until we hear word from Sony Santa Monica regarding the leak or an official announcement is made, we need to take all of this with a grain of salt. Though, shifting to Norse mythology would make sense for the series–as long as they find a way to tie it to Kratos’ story. Plot possibilities aside, cutting through crowds of enemies as the God of War is fun on its own; doing it in a new environment, and facing new foes would be even better.
