Will Smith Tries—and Fails—to Woo Sophia the Creepy Robot Lady

Will Smith is a charming, beloved, uber-famous megastar—which is why it would be difficult for anyone (anyone!) to turn down his romantic overtures. Well, human anyones it seems, because when he put the moves on the world’s first A.I. citizen, the robot named Sophia, he got shut down when his best pick up lines did not compute.

When it comes to picking up a super smart robot, it doesn’t matter if you’re a massively successful actor who first became famous on a classic sitcom, you can’t beguile an android who thinks jokes are “an irrational human behavior.” (Though in fairness his joke wouldn’t work on a human woman either). But it’s really tough to make a romantic connection when your music career doesn’t hit the right note, even when she likes ’80s hip hop.

I don’t know if Sophia is joking or not about watching I, Robot just to make sure she doesn’t “get any ideas,” but either way that’s one of the funniest things I’ve ever heard anyone say—human or robot. I want to take that line out to a fancy dinner…although I’m not sure I’d want to do that with “Sophia #6,” who despite being a technological wonder has a Death Becomes Her thing going on.

Sophia comes from Hanson Robotics, and this isn’t her first interaction with the mega-famous. Last year she was granted “citizenship” by Saudi Arabia and went toe-to-toe with Elon Musk on Twitter. But that’s nothing compared to shutting down Will Smith.

We already had plenty of reasons to fear the robotic uprising, and if the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air can’t win them over what chance do any if us have?

Is this the funniest failed pick-up ever? Tell us which doomed romantic overture was more awkward in the comments below.
