Will Smith has been in quite a few headlines lately with the news of him entering early talks to play the Genie in Disney’s live-action Aladdin. However, that’s not the only exciting thing the actor is in early discussions about. Turns out he’s also in talks to star in a film that pits him against the ultimate opponent: himself.
The year 1997 saw the beginnings of the idea for a film called Gemini Man, which would center around an aging assassin forced to face off with a clone of the 25-year-old version of himself. The idea was exciting to film studios, but technology wasn’t there to support a project starring one actor playing both old and young versions of himself. So while technology continued to evolve, the script underwent several makeovers, with actors like Mel Gibson, Clint Eastwood, and Harrison Ford considered for the film.
Happily, the film’s time has finally come. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Skydance Media decided we officially have the technology to create a film where one actor believably plays the embattled younger and older version of himself, and they picked up the film in October. To make matters more exciting, Ang Lee is currently in talks to direct the film.
So while this film sounds like it will be utterly badass, it’s still a bit too early to make movie going plans. Smith and Lee are in very early talks to work on the film, so things are far from set in stone. However, we can hope the two will be officially signed on to the film soon. After all, the only thing better than a movie with Will Smith in it is a movie with two Will Smiths in it. And with Ang Lee directing it will also undoubtedly be breathtaking and utterly visually compelling.
