When Sony and Marvel struck a deal to bring Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, some fans called upon the companies to use Miles Morales as the new big screen Spider-Man. While Tom Hollandâs Peter Parker ultimately made his way into Captain America: Civil War, Miles Morales may still get his chance to make a starring turn!
Heroic Hollywood is reporting that the upcoming animated Spider-Man movie will feature Miles Morales as its title hero. Because that film isnât connected to the MCU, it could allow Marvel and Sony the best of both worlds by giving each Spider-Man his own franchise. Of course, this is just a rumor for now, so donât get too excited yet. Nerdist has reached out to Sony for confirmation, but they declined to comment.
Miles Morales was created by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Sara Pichelli back in 2011 for Marvelâs Ultimate Universe line. Miles is one of Marvelâs highest profile biracial characters and he is half African American and half Puerto Rican. The character was inspired in part by actor Donald Glover, who was floated by fans as a potential Peter Parker for Sonyâs Amazing Spider-Man reboot. Glover went on to voice Miles in the Ultimate Spider-Man animated series, and it would be fitting if he reprised his role in the animated feature film as well…assuming that the report is accurate.
Another factor in favor of using Miles for the animated movie is that Marvel has given him a much higher profile since moving the character to the regular comic book universe. In addition to starring in his own monthly title, Miles Moralesâ Spidey is also one of the Avengers.
The animated Spider-Man movie currently lacks a title, but it does have Chris Miller and Phil Lord lined up to direct it. It will be released on December 21, 2018.
