The Marvel Cinematic Universe owes a lot to director Jon Favreau, who set the tone for the entire franchise with the first two Iron Man films. And while Favreau has stayed involved as an executive producer of the Avengers movies, he hasnât helmed a Marvel film since 2010. But according to Favreau, he and Marvel are still talking about getting him back into the directorâs chair, or perhaps Happy Hogan’s suit.
âWe talk a lot about how I could be involved there and I exist both in front of and behind the camera in the Marvel universe, which puts me in a unique position which I enjoy,â said Favreau during a new interview with IGN. âWeâre always trying to figure out if thereâs a way for me to contribute beyond just being an executive producer there. I wouldnât be surprised if something pops up soon, but thereâs no one property that weâre identifying that Iâd want to helm up and shoulder.â
Favreau went on to express some doubts about his ability to grasp the MCU at its current size, but he did say that all it would take to bring him back is âa great story.â
Itâs not as if Favreau has to go back to Marvel. Disneyâs The Jungle Book appears to be on its way towards becoming one of his most successful movies, and there is a sequel on the horizon. But for argument’s sake, letâs go over a few Marvel possibilities that may suit the man if he were to come back for Phase 4. Robert Downey Jr. recently said that he might be up for âone moreâ Iron Man solo film. It seems like a no-brainer to reteam the director with Downey again.
However, Favreauâs sense of humor and his apparent rapport with younger performers could also serve him well if Marvel and Sony were to consider him for the inevitable sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming. And if not Spider-Man or Iron Man, there is a Runaways movie at Marvel thatâs been languishing in development. Perhaps Favreau would be a good fit for that as well.
