Will Jon Favreau Direct Another Marvel Movie?

The Marvel Cinematic Universe owes a lot to director Jon Favreau, who set the tone for the entire franchise with the first two Iron Man films. And while Favreau has stayed involved as an executive producer of the Avengers movies, he hasn’t helmed a Marvel film since 2010. But according to Favreau, he and Marvel are still talking about getting him back into the director’s chair, or perhaps Happy Hogan’s suit.

“We talk a lot about how I could be involved there and I exist both in front of and behind the camera in the Marvel universe, which puts me in a unique position which I enjoy,” said Favreau during a new interview with IGN. “We’re always trying to figure out if there’s a way for me to contribute beyond just being an executive producer there. I wouldn’t be surprised if something pops up soon, but there’s no one property that we’re identifying that I’d want to helm up and shoulder.”

Favreau went on to express some doubts about his ability to grasp the MCU at its current size, but he did say that all it would take to bring him back is “a great story.”

It’s not as if Favreau has to go back to Marvel. Disney’s The Jungle Book appears to be on its way towards becoming one of his most successful movies, and there is a sequel on the horizon. But for argument’s sake, let’s go over a few Marvel possibilities that may suit the man if he were to come back for Phase 4. Robert Downey Jr. recently said that he might be up for “one more” Iron Man solo film. It seems like a no-brainer to reteam the director with Downey again.

However, Favreau’s sense of humor and his apparent rapport with younger performers could also serve him well if Marvel and Sony were to consider him for the inevitable sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming. And if not Spider-Man or Iron Man, there is a Runaways movie at Marvel that’s been languishing in development. Perhaps Favreau would be a good fit for that as well.
