Why You Can’t Dance

Can’t dance? It might not be that you’re just a klutz, or, more precisely, there might be a biological reason for your klutziness.

MSNBC reports that a study from Oxford says that the inability to learn dance steps is related to a decrease in the level of a chemical in your brain. The researchers think that lower levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid — GABA — in the motor cortex of your brain blocks your receptiveness to mastering new moves. The study followed subjects’ ability to learn a simple series of finger movements when the subjects’ GABA levels were decreased.

Now, the study wasn’t really looking to help explain why you dance like a dork. The findings might have more serious application towards helping patients recover from strokes. But this may be the reason you can’t learn the John Wall Dance or the Dougie, why the Funky Chicken left you baffled, or why people keep shouting “You got served!” at you. Maybe they’ll develop a pill to help you learn how to dance before “Step Up 6” gets released.

And I’ll leave any Thom Yorke references to you.

While we’re at it, here are pandas doing the Dougie:
