White Denim’s “Ha Ha Ha Ha (Yeah)” Is a Slinky Funk Explosion (Premiere)

More than anything else, White Denim are pros at reinvention.

In the last 10 years the Austin-based outfit have deftly maneuvered from garage rock to psych rock to post rock to art rock, hitting all the funky combinations in between. Their first single off their upcoming album Stiff, titled “Holda You (I’m Psycho),” leaned heavily into vintage power pop territory—the track’s name reminiscent of one by legendary power pop forbears, Big Star. But now the group is back with their second single and it embraces the aforementioned funk.

“Ha Ha Ha Ha (Yeah”) sees the band emphasizing the groovier side of the pentatonic scale: think ’70s radio rock meets The Meters. Over a very crunchy riff, lead singer James Petralli sings what should henceforth be my life mission statement: “Be yourself, try to have a good time.” The task is certainly made easier by the tune, whose title reminds you that life, stress, and all the rest, is mostly laughable.

On the more ridiculous side of things, the band’s visuals for the album (reminder that it’s called Stiff, lol) and track include a caucasian dude whose tighty whities are erupting with cacti. Not an ideal situation, but one of those ordeals that you know will be funny once it stops directly affecting your life. The best medicine for a dilemma like this (after icing and probably bed rest) is laughing it off and dancing the pain way. White Denim make that pretty easy to do.

Stiff (Downtown/Sony Red) comes out March 25, and you can preorder it right here.
