What’s Free This Month: HALO: SPARTAN ASSAULT, DARK SOULS, CHARLIE MURDER, TERRARIA, SLY COOPER

This month, Microsoft’s Games with Gold arrives to the Xbox One with Halo: Spartan Assault and Max: The Curse of Brotherhood.

Head of Xbox Phil Spencer announced in May that Games with Gold will make its debut with Xbox One’s June system update. While there’s no set date as of right now, Xbox Live Gold members will have a chance to play top-down shooter Halo: Spartan Assault and puzzle platformer Max: The Curse of Brotherhood when the update releases.

In the meantime XBL Gold members who have an Xbox 360 can enjoy dying a million times in the action RPG Dark Souls, free now until June 15. As an added bonus for its one year anniversary, Games with Gold will drop two free games between June 16 and 30th, the musical beat ’em up game Charlie Murder AND Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition.

For anyone who hasn’t had a chance to play any of Microsoft’s free titles, I highly suggest scooping up all of them, especially Charlie Murder. It’s an incredible and tough co-op multiplayer game that actually has far more depth than your typical beat ’em up title.

Sony isn’t missing the beat either with their six PlayStation Plus free titles. Yes, SIX! The PlayStation team announced late in May that each of their platforms, Vita, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4, will receive two free games starting in June.

This month, PS Plus owners who have a PS4 will get their hands on side-scrolling platformer Trine 2: Complete Story and action puzzler Pixeljunk Ultimate. These aren’t the regular editions of the games, but the bundles with more content to enjoy.

PS3 Plus members will get a chance to play NBA 2K14 and cartoony stealth game Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time. Vita Plus members will score 2D builder Terraria and pixelated puzzler Mutant Mudds Deluxe.

Sony has also announced that all PS Plus free games will be available for download starting the first Tuesday of every month and ending the following Tuesday of the next month. That gives plenty of time for folks to download the games on their selected platforms. If you’re not looking to download the games right away, you can always just “purchase” the free game and it’ll be ready to download as you please so long as you’re a PS Plus member.

Microsoft has learned a lot after a year of launching Games with Gold. Do you think the freebies being offered are on the same level as PS Plus titles or are they both on par in terms of pleasing their subscribers? Let us know in the comments below.
