What’s Free This Month: GUACAMELEE, BATTLEBLOCK THEATER, TOWERFALL, STRIDER, DEAD SPACE 3

Steam’s summer sale may have left a gaping hole in many gamers’ wallets, but July’s free games for Xbox and PlayStation consoles are here to help extinguish the flames.

Last month, Microsoft introduced Games With Gold to their Xbox One players with a lineup that included Halo: Spartan Assault and Max: The Curse of Brotherhood. This time around, they’re swapping out Spartan Assault with the third-party game Guacamelee! while Curse of Brotherhood sticks around for another month.

The action platformer Guacamelee! was originally released for the PlayStation 3 and PS Vita, but the new enhanced version of the game is making its way to the Xbox One for free. For those looking to play the Super Turbo Championship Edition, don’t fret — it’s releasing for the Xbox 360, Wii U, and PlayStation 4, though not for free, later this month.

From now until July 15th, Xbox 360 players can get their grappling hooks on the multiplayer-only title Gotham City Imposters. After the 15th, BattleBlock Theater will be available until July 31st. If you haven’t had a chance to play the over-the-top cat infested game, pick it up when it becomes available! It’s insanely fun and even better with friends so make sure you tell them to get their free copy as well.

PlayStation Plus members aren’t missing out on any of the excitement, because Towerfall Ascension is free for PS4 owners. If you’re looking for a game to play with your buddies during this long Independence Day weekend, I highly suggest picking this up and watching your friendships burn in lava.

PS4 Plus members also get Strider, the side scrolling action game while PS3 Plus members will receive access to the horror title Dead Space 3 and the liquid puzzle game Vessel.

Keeping up with their promise to release two games per every Sony platform, Sony is offering two games for the Vita as well. PS Plus Vita owners can nab the action RPG title that takes you through Japanese mythology, Muramasa Rebirth, and the game that leads you through the discovery of humanity, Doki-Doki Universe.

The free games this month are worth their full price as is in my opinion, so I can’t deny that I’m thrilled over them being free. Are Microsoft and Sony delivering enough on the free games forefront thus far? Let us know in the comments below.
