For the second year in a row, Game of Thrones was named TV’s top drama at the Emmy Awards. Considering the show’s continuing success with fans and critics alike, it’s no wonder that everyone expects HBO to get a Game of Thrones spin-off up and running as soon as possible. (There are only two seasons left, after all, so the clock is ticking!) Today’s Nerdist News is diving into the seven kingdoms to determine which parts of George R.R. Martin‘s fantasy world should be further explored on TV after the author discussed this weekend his desire for more.
Nerdist News host â and the only sister in the Brotherhood Without Banners â Jessica Chobot has a few specific ideas in mind. The most natural spin-off would be the Tales of Dunk and Egg, a series of prequel stories that follow Brienne’s ancestor, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his squire, Aegon Targaryenâa boy who went on to become the king. Martin has written three Dunk and Egg novellas, and suggested that they could be adapted as annual TV movies on HBO.
But what if we want another weekly TV series? As Martin has repeatedly pointed out, there are a lot of interesting stories in the fictional history of his world. Could we eventually see The Doom of Valyria play out in a Caprica-like prequel? Or will the Targaryen civil war be explored in a Dance of Dragons series? The possibilities are exciting to think about!
If there is a spin-off, Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss have reiterated that they’re not coming back after they wrap the final 13 episodes. The duo are gonna be a hard act to follow, and anyone who steps into that void is gonna need to find the right mixture of fidelity to Martin’s text and the ability to add to the mythos without betraying its spirit.
What would you like to see in a Game of Thrones spinoff series? Let’s discuss in the comment section below.
