Marvel Explains What Nick Fury Was Doing During INFINITY WAR

We all know what happened to Samuel L. Jackson‘s Nick Fury at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, so the real question is, just where the heck was he during the events of the rest of the movie? When Thanos’ forces were kicking our heroes’ asses left and right in Wakanda, they sure could have used Nick Fury’s spare Helicarrier to help out! Now we have an answer about Fury’s activities. Via CBR, Marvel’s Captain Marvel Prelude #1 by writer Will Corona Pilgrim and artist Andrea Di Vito explains quite a bit.

The one-shot comic follows Nick Fury and Maria Hill from the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron, the last canonical appearance of Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, through to the post-credits scene of Infinity War. So what was Fury up to these past three years? He was still working with Captain America’s fugitive “Secret Avengers,” as they traveled across the world searching for weapons of mass destruction that had been augmented with Chitauri technology. The group of heroes destroyed the weapons before they fell into the wrong hands.

The one-shot issue also shows Fury was pushing for Captain America and Iron Man to mend fences, knowing the world would need the full roster of the Avengers again at some point.

One panel even shows Hill asking Fury if he knows any more superheroes he can call in an emergency, Fury then tells her “Nah. If we do our job right, we’ll never be in position of having to call her” with the “her” in question presumably being Captain Marvel. I’m not sure why the Chitauri invasion of New York didn’t qualify for a message to Captain Marvel (I’d say that was a pretty staggeringly large emergency), but maybe Fury thought the Avengers were enough to handle that little threat.

Pilgrim told Marvel why Fury got in touch with Captain Marvel in his final moments. He said, “Carol’s the biggest gun you’ve got and Fury’s never one to waste a silver bullet, so if he’s finally making that call after all this time and after all he’s faced alongside the Avengers, then he’s truly seeing the situation as a last resort.”
