What is the Future of DOCTOR STRANGE?

It was another magical trip to the box office for Marvel this weekend when Doctor Strange conjured up their fourteenth straight number 1 opening in a row. With an $85 million take and some of the most enthusiastic critical reviews the studio has ever earned, it’s easy to guess what the Sorcerer Supreme‘s next trick will be: a sequel! But what could the future possibly hold for Doctor Strange 2?

As everyone who sat through the end credits knows, Marvel is already laying the groundwork for the continuing adventures of Doctor Strange. In a post-credit scene, we see Mordo return to take away the mystical energy that was allowing a paraplegic, played by Benjamin Bratt, to walk. It seems like Mordo is well on his way to becoming Baron Mordo, one of Doctor Strange’s most dangerous and iconic villains. But does that necessarily mean a Mordo/Strange conflict will be the centerpiece of Strange 2? Maybe not. In a recent interview, director Scott Derrickson mentioned that he really wants Nightmare to be the villain in the next movie. Nightmare is a demon from the dream dimension who feeds on the fear of humans, an idea Derrickson felt was a bit too trippy to pack into the first film. But with all the world-building out of the way, he’s now free to explore the really weird corners of the Doctor Strange mythology.

So what does this mean for Mordo? Well, we could have a trilogy in the works. In Doctor Strange 2, Strange travels to the Dream Realm to battle Nightmare, while in the waking world, Mordo continues to steal the power of other sorcerers. In the third movie, Strange returns to our reality to finally do battle with a magically maxed-out Mordo. But what do you think? Do you agree with our Strange sequel speculation or have we transcended to a completely wrong plane of reality. Let us know in the comments.
