Whale Watching Is Better With Drones…And Three Whales

How could you possibly make an absolutely picture-perfect day relaxing out on the high seas, where you can’t tell where the blue sky ends and the clear ocean waters begins, any better? How can you improve on that gorgeous moment of perfect tranquil solitude? With a private, up-close visit from a humpback whale, that’s how. And if that sounds truly inspiring, imagine what it would be like to get a visit from three.

Fortunately we don’t have to, thanks to this stunning drone footage capturing that incredible moment. This video was posted by YouTube user Wam Wamland, who said that the close encounter with the beautiful sea denizens took place this past August during a trip in the South Pacific near New Caledonia (east of Australia). This would not look out of place on a BBC Nature show, with Sir David Attenborough narrating the experience.

What’s amazing beyond how beautiful this moment looks is watching how the enormous whales control their bodies and come so close to the boat without running into it and accidentally knocking it over.

According to New Caledonia Today, these whales come to the area for 3 months a year (mid-July until mid-September), traveling up from Antarctica “to reproduce and give birth,” so these waters are a prime location to spot the whales. Fortunately, they were able to capture the incredible moment with some skilled drone flying, so that the rest of us can enjoy it too.
