WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER RPG Will Send You to Camp Firewood

The most excited we’ve ever been about going to kid’s summer camp has been as adults watching Wet Hot American Summer. Sure, their insane one-day musical schedule would exhaust us, but you can’t deny they produce some great live shows. But even if we’re a little too old to go to now (it’s not like we’re 16 or something, like all the counselors on the show), a new RPG will look to make it possible for us to live out our dreams of attending Camp Firewood.

Publisher The Devastator, which focuses on humor-related titles, is hoping to Kickstart their officially-licensed role playing game, Wet Hot American Summer: Fantasy Camp, based on the cult favorite film and Netflix series from David Wain and Michael Showalter.

Wet Hot American Summer

They describe it as “an old school tabletop RPG that allows fans to play as a camper, counselor or staffer, such as Coop, Beth, or Gene, and experience one insane day at Camp Firewood.” The game’s book will even feature a forward from Wain himself, as well as tips from Michael Ian Black, Joe Lo Truglio, and Marguerite Moreau about how to play as their characters. If those touches aren’t enough to make it feel like the real thing, the rulebook was “written” by the Indoor Kids from the movie, and safe to say they know a little something about surviving summer camp thanks to a good ole D20.

The game will have three customizable story options for you to choose from: Save the Camp, Superstardom, and Bonfire Boinking, which covers all of the main events in a normal day at Camp Firewood. We immediately vote for Bonfire Boinking–because we’re immature…and maybe cause we weren’t quite as lucky at summer camp when we were kids, okay?–but we highly recommend not playing as Victor if you want to win that story line.

The Kickstarter, which is hoping to raise $12,500 to be fully backed, is open now, and will run until May 17. You can get a digital copy of the game for just $10, or you can receive a physical copy for $20, though their $35 Gene package seems quite appealing, since it comes with an actual bottle of dick cream.

What? We appreciate authenticity in our games! It’s not like we’re going to fondle some sweaters or hump our fridge when we play. At least we don’t think we will. We’ll have to see what the rulebook suggests about that.

You can check out the rest of the tiers, which go as high as $500 dollars and give you the chance to get the game earlier than it’s November fulfillment date, on their Kickstarter page. If you opt for an early adopter package, you can already be playing the game when Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later comes to Netflix this summer.

Because even if we are too old to go to summer camp, we’re never too old to appreciate it.

Which character from Wet Hot American Summer would you most want to role play as (I call dibs on Andy)? Which story line would you want to follow? Lift us higher and higher by sharing your thoughts with us in the comments below.
