Wes Anderson Directs the X-MEN in This Silly Parody

Despite their reputation as one of Marvel’s most popular superteams, the X-Men are, at their core, about being unpopular. About being marginalized, about being odd, strange, quirky. Like… Well, like the heroes of a Wes Anderson movie! We’ve seen plenty of video parodies of Anderson’s work in recent years (my favorite of which was Saturday Night Live‘s The Midnight Coterie of Sinister Intruders, featuring Ed Norton’s spot-on impersonation of Owen Wilson). But rarely has one fused Anderson’s style to a subject as appropriate as Professor Charles Xavier’s Children of the Atom in “What if Wes Anderson Directed X-Men” — from filmmaker Patrick Willems. See what I mean below.

God, that Danger Room… And those jumpsuits! From split screens to voiceover narration to pans to sets to lighting to slow-mo to its use of the snowcapped brownstones of New York, Willems doesn’t miss a single opportunity to focus Anderson’s one-of-a-kind perspective on the world of Marvel’s merry mutants. It’s so damn good, in fact, that — with apologies to Bryan Singer and the fine job he’s been doing on the X-Men film series — of all the Anderson parodies I’ve seen, this is the one I’d most like to see developed into a feature. C’mon, Fox Searchlight, you’ve already got the film rights to the characters — now get the man to direct it. Make Wes Anderson’s The Uncanny X-Men happen!

“Welcome to the X-Men, Bobby Drake. Hope you survive the experience.” That, ladies and gentlemen, bespeaks a love so pure it makes me weep…

X-Men

But what about you guys? Does this capture the Wes Anderson — and the X-Men — you know and love? Let us know below!
