Next year will be the 30th anniversary of Chucky‘s first appearance in Child’s Play, but the demented serial killer doll isn’t waiting around for another year to strike again. The long-awaited Chucky 7 is now officially going to be called Cult of Chucky, and it’s coming out later this year!
Entertainment Weekly broke the story about Cult of Chucky and debuted the new teaser trailer; which you can see above. But because the film won’t start shooting until later this week, the clips are from the previous movies in the franchise. Child’s Play co-writer Don Mancini will once again step into the director’s chair for this direct-to-video sequel, and he’s already proven himself after directing the last films in the series: Seed of Chucky and Curse of Chucky.
Of course, it just wouldn’t be a Chucky film without Brad Dourif back as the voice of the title character, and it appears that Cult of Chucky is a direct sequel to Curse of Chucky, since Dourif’s daughter, Fiona Dourif is also reprising her role as Nica Pierce from that film. You may recall that Chucky successfully framed Nica for the murder of her own family, and when the new story picks up, even Nica will believe the lie. However, Chucky isn’t done tormenting Nica, and she won’t be safe from his reach within an asylum for the criminally insane.
Jennifer Tilly will also be back as the voice of Tiffany, Chucky’s psycho partner in love and crime. But more intriguingly, Alex Vincent is reprising his role as Andy Barclay, the kid who was first menaced by Chucky in the original Child’s Play and its first sequel. Vincent briefly reprised his role as an adult in a post-credits scene in Curse of Chucky. But considering that Andy had the upper hand in that encounter with Chucky, that scene may not be in continuity with this film.
Cult of Chucky doesn’t have a set release date, but EW’s report indicates that it will be released on DVD, Blu-ray, and On-Demand in time for Halloween 2017.
