You are not going to believe this, but we are huge “Weird Al” Yankovic fans.
Oh, wait, that’s the single most believable thing we’ve ever said. We are Nerdist after all, and he resides in the most rarefied echelon of super nerds to ever come into our lives. So you can imagine our excitement when he visited our show Mothership, which airs weekly on our interactive membership service Alpha, to discuss his thoughts on all sorts of wonderful geeky topics. Spoiler alert: we love him even more now.
Yankovic sat in with Mothership hosts Hector Navarro and Amy Vorpahl (perhaps the single biggest Weird Al fan in the world), to talk about his animated Disney XD show Milo Murphy’s Law, as well as the upcoming release of his new Medium Rarities album, and a ton of other nerdy subjects.

Hector and Amy got Yankovic to explain the differences between acoustic and electric accordions, how he has outlasted many of the musicians he has parodied over the years, the things that make him nerd out–including his all-time favorite book and movie, the insane size of Hawaiian shirt collection (he has given away more shirts to Goodwill than you’ll ever own), and whether or not he’ll ever do another UHF movie, among other topics.
The chat originally aired on Alpha, a collaboration with our sister site Geek and Sundry through which fans had a chance to chime in and ask Yankovic some real-time questions. If you’re bummed out you didn’t get a chance to speak with Weird Al, you can get your own questions heard on future Alpha videos.
What Weird Al song do you love the most? And what other super nerd would you love to see visit Mothership? We’d–wait for it–love to hear from you in the comments below.
