“Weird Al” and John Williams Take the Hollywood Bowl This Summer

It’s a good time to be “Weird Al” Yankovic. His last album, Mandatory Fun hit number one on the charts, there’s a “Weird Al” action figure on the way, and he was recently named the new bandleader of Comedy Bang Bang! on IFC. Now Weird Al can add “Hollywood Bowl headliner” to his ever-growing list of accomplishments.

The Hollywood Bowl has announced its summer 2016 schedule, and “Weird Al” is slated to take over the Bowl on Friday, July 22; and Saturday, July 23. The set list for “Weird Al Takes The Bowl” is expected to be a sampling of his music catalog from his 40 year career. “Weird Al” will also be joined by some musical guests to be named later. Yankovic previously performed at the Hollywood Bowl in 2014 for the musical tribute to The Simpsons.

Also on the schedule for three consecutive nights starting on Friday, September 2 is legendary film composer John Williams, a regularly featured artist at the Bowl. But this will be Williams’ first appearance at the Bowl since Star Wars: The Force Awakens hit theaters; which means that this concert could also include music from that film. In fact, we would bet on it!

On Friday, July 8; and Saturday, July 9; director J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek will be screened at the Hollywood Bowl with an orchestra performing Michael Giacchino’s score live and in sync with the film. Other featured artists this year include Steely Dan, Culture Club, Chicago, Diana Ross, and The Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson performing Pet Sounds alongside several musical guests.
